NJ Half Marathon Sees Waist-Deep Floods and Race Ban

After nearly 5 inches of rain submerged the Paramus course, county officials issued a one-year ban against the race organizer.

The Race Faster Half Marathon in New Jersey turned into a waterlogged ordeal after heavy rains flooded the course. With floodwaters reaching waist depth and presenting major hazards, local authorities penalized the event organizer.

What was supposed to be a standard road race transformed into a nearly aquatic trial in the United States. The Race Faster Half Marathon, held in Paramus, New Jersey, drew widespread attention across the endurance community after proceeding despite severe flooding triggered by nearly 5 inches (125 mm) of rain.

The start was initially delayed by two hours due to inclement weather and regional flood warnings, but organizers chose not to cancel the event. Along the route, participants encountered sections where floodwaters reached waist level, forcing many runners to hold onto handrails or each other to navigate the strong currents without falling.

Hidden risks and race dropouts

Roughly 250 athletes managed to reach the finish line, but many chose to drop out due to the clear hazards. The primary concern was not just the rising water, but what remained invisible underneath: hidden potholes, broken glass, and the threat of submerged electrical equipment. Despite striking footage circulating across social media, no injuries were reported.

Official sanctions and investigation

The incident triggered swift repercussions from local authorities. Officials from Bergen County stated they had instructed race organizers to reroute the event onto a safer, alternate course, but several runners continued along the flooded original path.

Conversely, participants reported receiving no clear directions about course modifications during the race. Following the event, the county launched a formal investigation and prohibited Race Faster from hosting sporting events in local public parks for at least one year.
