World Athletics has announced the 20 nominees for Athlete of the Year, bringing track stars and road runners together in a single competition. Brazilian hurdler Alison dos Santos is among the finalists, with fan voting open until October 17.
World Athletics has released the shortlist of 20 nominees for the Athlete of the Year award, split evenly between 10 men and 10 women. For this edition, the governing body discontinued the dedicated out-of-stadium category, placing road runners in direct contention with track and field's biggest stars.
Road Stars and Record Breakers in the Running
Standout road athletes include Tigist Assefa and Agnes Ngetich. Assefa clocked a time of 2:15:41 at the London Marathon—a women-only world record—alongside her recent achievements in Berlin. Meanwhile, Agnes Ngetich caught global attention by winning the World Cross Country Championships and running 1:05:15 at the Copenhagen Half Marathon, also a women-only record. Kenyan runner Sebastian Sawe is another prominent name highlighted among the circuit's top marathoners.
Alison dos Santos Among the Finalists
Brazil is represented in the nominations by Alison dos Santos, nicknamed "Piu," nominated for his world-class performances in the 400-meter hurdles. The hurdler has built an impressive streak of results on the international stage and across the Diamond League, cementing his status among global track and field elite.
Voting Format and Fan Influence
The award winners will be decided in part by track and field fans. Public voting remains open until October 17 and carries a 25% weight in the final outcome. The remaining 75% of the vote is determined by the World Athletics Council and technical panel.
