Ironman 70.3 São Paulo: Epic Comeback & Couple's Victory

Fernando Toldi grabs the lead at km 17 of the run while Rachel Olson takes the women's title at Cidade Universitária.

Under steady rain at Cidade Universitária, Ironman 70.3 São Paulo crowned Fernando Toldi in the men's pro division and American Rachel Olson among the women. Here are the top highlights from the race.

The rainy conditions at Cidade Universitária (USP) did not dampen the excitement or high-octane pace of Ironman 70.3 São Paulo. Featuring fierce battles across both professional and amateur divisions, the race delivered dramatic run comebacks, transition mishaps, and even a shared celebration on the podium.

Fernando Toldi's Comeback and Taccone's Drama in the Men's Race

Action in the men's elite division started heating up right out of the water. One of the top pre-race favorites, Argentina's Luciano Taccone, endured tense moments in T1 when his wetsuit zipper jammed. The unexpected delay cost Taccone a spot in the lead pack, forcing him into a solo chase on the bike.

Veteran racer Reinaldo Colucci took full advantage to control the cycling leg, surging ahead and comfortably leading for most of the 90 km course. On the run, however, the chase pack turned up the heat. Fernando Toldi set a blistering pace—clocking a 1:13:26 half marathon—and overtook Colucci at the 17-kilometer mark to take the tape in 3:48:21.

André Lopes also mounted an impressive charge on the run (1:14:35) to lock in second place, while Colucci rounded out the podium in third after finishing his half marathon in 1:18:40.

Couple's Celebration with Rachel Olson and Mariana Borges on the Podium

In the women's pro field, the standout performer was American triathlete Rachel Olson, who secured her first victory on Brazilian soil with a finishing time of 4:23:54. Married to men's runner-up André Lopes, Olson made it a family affair atop the podium and celebrated the milestone with a victory dance across the finish line. The women's pro podium was rounded out by Mariana Borges in second place and Luma in third.

Age-Group Highlights and Post-Race Discussions

The amateur field also produced elite-caliber times across the USP campus. Overall age-group champion Felipe Santos posted a remarkable 3:56:00 finish—recording splits of 24:14 in the swim, 2:10:00 on the bike, and 1:17:00 on the run. Second place overall among amateurs went to Diego Arantes, who turned heads with a blistering 1:12:00 half-marathon split.

The Radar Stemma podcast broke down the event's top storylines, debating behind-the-scenes endurance sports dynamics and community race-betting initiatives such as Tri Bet, hosted by partner channel O Amador.
