Boston Marathon Cutoff and 'Boston 130' Book Launch

With over 33,000 qualified applicants and a new entry lottery, the Boston running community also celebrates a milestone book.

The Boston Athletic Association has begun verifying qualifying times to establish the anticipated cutoff mark among more than 33,000 applicants. At the same time, the Brazilian marathon community celebrated the launch of the book Boston 130, a project compiling memorable stories from the world's most historic marathon.

The season of anticipation for runners aiming to tackle the most historic 26.2-mile race has officially begun. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) recorded 33,656 registration applications from athletes who met their age-group qualifying standard, slightly up from the 33,267 applicants in the previous cycle. Now, organizers are meticulously verifying race times before announcing the dreaded cutoff time—the buffer needed under the official standard to secure a bib.

Cutoff calculations and a new entry lottery

With results expected in early October, runners anticipate a cutoff mark near five minutes faster than the qualifying standard. The biggest update for this edition is a special drawing of around 1,000 extra spots reserved exclusively for qualified applicants who met the standard but missed the final cutoff, giving athletes an additional chance to toe the starting line.

Celebration and heritage with the 'Boston 130' book

Beyond the anticipation surrounding the Hopkinton start line, this week also marked the release of the Boston 130 project. Curated by Júnior Double, the book brings together firsthand accounts and memories from Brazilian runners who have tackled the challenging course of this American World Marathon Major.

The launch event brought together co-authors and prominent running figures such as Carlos Gueiros, Nato Amaral, Marcos Paulo Reis, Nelson Evêncio, and journalist Sérgio Xavier, who wrote the book's foreword. The volume also includes interactive QR code content, offering special episodes and commentary on pivotal moments along the route, such as the iconic 35-kilometer mark.
