Miguel Gomes dos Santos Wins U-16 Brazilian 1,000m Title
The son of Olympians Marílson and Juliana claimed gold at Ibirapuera and already holds the national U-16 record.
At 15 years old, Miguel Gomes dos Santos won the Brazilian U-16 1,000-meter title at Ibirapuera. The Sesi runner, son of Marílson and Juliana Gomes dos Santos, proved his strong form on the track in São Paulo.
Brazilian track and field witnessed another impressive achievement bearing the Gomes dos Santos family name. At 15 years old, Miguel Gomes dos Santos, an athlete for Sesi and son of Olympic distance runners Marílson Gomes dos Santos and Juliana Gomes dos Santos, earned his first national title by winning the 1,000-meter event at the Brazilian U-16 Championships.
Gold at the Ibirapuera track and a national record
The victory came on the track at Ibirapuera in São Paulo, under rain and with his parents watching from the stands. Miguel covered the distance in 2:38.24, showing tactical maturity by conserving energy during the race to overtake his opponent in the final stretch.
The result cements a breakout season for the young runner. In September, during the Paulista Championship, Miguel had already broken the Brazilian U-16 record in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:28.98, setting one of the fastest marks in the history of the country's youth division.
Olympic heritage and grassroots development
Carrying the last name of two Brazilian sporting icons brings both visibility and high expectations, but his progression is being closely guided by his family. As the son of a two-time New York City Marathon champion and a Pan American Games champion, Miguel is taking his first competitive strides in middle-distance events across São Paulo and Brazilian track and field.
