Ironman World Championship in Kona Sees Historic Comebacks

Marked by the joint return of the men's and women's elite fields, the race in Hawaii delivered dramatic marathon finishes.

The Ironman World Championship in Kona reunited men and women on the same day, featuring fierce battles down to the final meters. Taylor Knibb and Vincent Luis claimed the world titles following dramatic turnarounds in the brutal Hawaiian heat and humidity.

The Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, reunited men and women on the same race day for the first time since 2019. Under classic island conditions—sweltering heat and oppressive humidity—the races were defined by dramatic turnarounds in the final stretch of the marathon, punishing elite contenders and age-groupers alike.

Final-kilometer drama and victory for Taylor Knibb

In the women's race, American Taylor Knibb captured the world championship title with a time of 8:36:29. The victory was decided just over one kilometer from the finish line, when Knibb overtook Norway's Solveig Løvseth.

Løvseth led virtually the entire marathon until kilometer 41, when extreme exhaustion triggered a physical collapse. Despite falling and having to walk intermittently through visible distress, the Norwegian managed to cross the finish line in 9:02:09 to secure eighth place. Germany's Laura Philipp finished second and Switzerland's Julie Derron took third to complete the podium.

Stunning Kona debut for Vincent Luis

In the men's event, France's Vincent Luis was crowned world champion in his Kona debut, clocking a winning time of 7:47:27. His victory was also forged on the run, overtaking Denmark's Magnus Ditlev in the decisive miles.

Ditlev, who had dominated much of the race starting on the bike, held the lead until roughly 7 km remained. Severely worn down by the pace and stifling conditions, the Dane slowed to a walk and ultimately withdrew from the race. Norway's Gustav Iden also featured prominently among the men's podium finishers.
