Maíra's start in cycling and the pursuit of high performance

Maíra began her journey on two wheels after the birth of her second daughter, seeking freedom and well-being. Technical lessons quickly led to road cycling, but not without early scares: during one of her first long highway rides, she suffered a severe crash resulting in lumbar spine fractures. After rehabilitation, Maíra returned to cycling with better structure, rapidly progressed in the sport, and began competing in extreme mountain races, landing on the podium while navigating the grueling pace of high-performance athletics.

Marriage, High Performance & Life Phases: Pavani and Maíra

How sports entered Pavani's life

Pavani started cycling more intensely as pandemic restrictions lifted, partly to keep up with Maíra and stay aligned with his wife's athletic lifestyle. He describes experiencing flow—the mental detachment brought on by prolonged physical exertion, akin to his previous background in surfing—pushing through the initial aches and tackling extreme challenges in his very first year of cycling, including a grueling experience at the Haute Route.

Motherhood, maternal guilt, and deciding to slow down

Chasing peak performance on the bike demanded sacrifices across social and professional life, taking a significant toll on the family dynamic. The turning point arrived during a family vacation when her daughters asked if she could "not be so healthy," highlighting the lack of maternal energy drained by relentless training. Recognizing that high performance offered no middle ground, Maíra decided to step away from spreadsheet-driven training and redefine cycling purely recreationally to prioritize her daughters and work.

Readjusting marriage and embracing new athletic routines

With shifted habits, the couple had to align expectations to accommodate their evolving sports routines: while Maíra transitioned to tennis to play alongside their daughters, Pavani remained focused on cycling. They found balance through open communication, respecting household schedules, and reorganizing training plans, ensuring athletic commitments did not compromise quality time and family goals.

The Votoruna project and the boom in outdoor sports

Pavani and Maíra also discussed the Votoruna Live Park initiative, a space created to bridge the infrastructure gap for outdoor sports enthusiasts. The project aims to meet growing post-pandemic demand among cyclists, triathletes, and trail runners by offering amenities such as ice baths, treadmills, nutrition, and locker rooms to strengthen the athletic community.

Quick-fire round on personality, marriage, and sports

To wrap up, the couple joined in a playful Q&A tackling personal quirks and personalities. Amid laughs about who is more dramatic, stubborn, or competitive, Pavani and Maíra defined marriage as dedication and companionship, and sport as an ongoing quest for consistency, learning, and happiness.
