Why ABM Works Best for B2B Customer Expansion
Felix Grivot discusses why Account-Based Marketing delivers higher ROI for customer expansion than for cold acquisition.
Speaking on Marketing - The Podcast, Felix Grivot explains how to leverage ABM to drive revenue expansion in B2B accounts. The discussion details the importance of mapping genuine customer pain points, orchestrating multiple touchpoints, and filtering out trends that do not fit a company's business model.
Felix Grivot, Head of Marketing at FCamara, spoke on Marketing - The Podcast with Bruno Gimenes about the practical application of Account-Based Marketing (ABM) and focusing on revenue expansion within existing customer accounts. The excerpt is part of a broader discussion on aligning revenue teams, go-to-market strategies, and corporate growth in the B2B tech industry.
In the video above, Grivot and Bruno discuss how operational misalignment between sales and marketing hurts revenue. HubSpot data shows that 78% of Brazilian companies lose revenue due to a lack of alignment between these teams, while the State of Marketing 2024 report indicates that only 35% of marketing professionals consider their integration with sales to be strong.
Connecting with genuine customer pain points
For Grivot, ABM is one of the most complex strategies to build in a B2B environment because it requires marketing teams to abandon internal assumptions and get closer to the daily reality of the buyer. When teams isolate themselves in conceptual debates or interact exclusively with AI, they lose touch with the account's real needs.
Grivot notes that the model fundamentally relies on a detailed understanding of each stakeholder's demands: "Well-executed ABM requires very clear insights into customer pain points." According to him, without substantive data on those pain points, marketing initiatives lose relevance and turn into generic outreach on platforms like LinkedIn.
Account expansion versus new customer acquisition
Detailing FCamara's hands-on experience, Grivot explains that applying ABM to net-new account prospecting did not yield the expected returns. Given these early results, the strategy shifted toward expanding revenue within existing accounts.
"We tested ABM for new accounts, and the results weren't that positive. I believe we also need to talk about what didn't work; it's important to share that," Grivot explains. Following this insight, the company selected specific accounts to build comprehensive expansion playbooks, tracking revenue growth year over year and pulling marketing efforts from accounts that showed no potential to scale.
Orchestration and multiple touchpoints
Executing ABM for a select group of accounts requires systematic monitoring of public information and corporate milestones. Grivot highlights the importance of tracking news and setting Google Trends alerts to spot market shifts, mergers, acquisitions, or earnings reports, equipping account executives with contextual data.
This approach involves coordinating multiple touchpoints, ranging from end-of-year gifts delivered by sales reps to targeted paid media campaigns on LinkedIn and proprietary events tailored to various stakeholders across the target organization. The process requires at least a year of consistent execution to mature and demonstrate tangible revenue expansion.
Leadership's role in filtering strategies
Beyond selecting outreach channels, Grivot emphasizes that marketing leadership must evaluate whether the company has the right product portfolio and average contract value before launching an ABM program. Businesses with low-ticket products or no additional solutions to cross-sell or upsell cannot justify the operational complexity of the methodology.
Addressing the flood of corporate trends, Grivot stresses the need for leadership focus: "We don't need to jump on every strategy; we don't have to ride every hype wave." For him, management's primary responsibility is acting as a filter for allocating time and budget, preventing teams from burning out on initiatives that don't fit the business's current stage.
