From Phone Books to SEO: The Evolution of Web Search
Felix Grivot explores how the transition from print to digital portals shaped search strategies and artificial intelligence.
In a conversation with Bruno Gimenes, Felix Grivot explains how his background in phone book advertising shaped his perspective on web indexing. He details why consistent content production remains essential for visibility across search engines and language models.
Felix Grivot, Head of Marketing at FCamara, sat down with Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast to discuss his early career in sales and how shifting from phone book ads to online portals built the foundation of his understanding of SEO and digital discovery. While the episode covers sales alignment and B2B marketing topics, his print media background illustrates the core logic of relevance that endures through the age of artificial intelligence.
The experience of selling print and digital ads
In the video above, Grivot recalls starting his sales career by cold-calling local businesses to negotiate print advertising space. For him, this hands-on sales experience helped shape his marketing approach and bridged the gap between both departments. "I would call clients to sell phone book ads—figuring out how the locksmith or the drain cleaning service could appear larger in the directory," Grivot recounts.
The market shift took place as physical publications lost traction and search behavior migrated online. "I was there when the phone book collapsed—when ad sales stopped and it ceased to exist. After that, I spent time selling web portal listings, right when we started talking about SEO and indexing," he states.
Content consistency: From indexing to AI
According to Grivot, the fundamental logic behind ranking in search engines and modern LLM-based tools remains tied to authority and relevance built over time across digital channels. He points out that brands with a consistent content history maintain a distinct advantage in organic discovery.
"The foundation doesn't change. In my view, consistency is key. Back in the early days, web portals provided that relevance and authority, and today, those who executed that well are undoubtedly much better positioned," Grivot explains when evaluating the technical continuum from web directories to AI-generated answers.
