US Track & Field: Seasons and Youth Sports Exchange

The split between cross country, indoor, and outdoor track opens doors for young international athletes to compete in the US.

Youth track and field in the United States is structured across three distinct seasons during the school year. Learn how the transition between cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track works, and discover exchange opportunities for young runners.

Youth and collegiate track and field in the United States is structured in a highly dynamic format, organized into three distinct seasons aligned with the school calendar and weather conditions. The three phases of the American calendar

The first phase of the athletic year begins in August, marking the start of the school year with the cross country season, which runs through December. During this period, training and races take place exclusively on grass and trail surfaces, prioritizing longer distances. While younger athletes typically race around one mile, older categories take on courses of up to 5,000 meters.

With the arrival of winter in December, the indoor track season begins, running through April or May. In colder northern states, outdoor tracks close due to snow, shifting competitions into indoor arenas—while in regions like Florida, where temperatures rarely drop below 34°F to 36°F (1°C to 2°C), outdoor training remains viable. The indoor circuit features major national events, such as championship meets held in Virginia Beach.

From April or May through August, the calendar transitions to the classic outdoor track & field season. It is during this final phase that the summer circuit heats up with track races across traditional middle-distance and long-distance events.

Exchange and opportunities for Brazilian athletes

For Brazilian athletes and families interested in experiencing the American sports routine, the July vacation period is often strategic. Foreign athletes can register through local clubs to compete in tournaments open to international participants, such as the Club Nationals held in Jacksonville.

The competitive structure accommodates children starting at ages 5 and 6 and extends up to the 18-and-under youth division. Track distances are tailored to each age group: younger competitors run 400m, 800m, and 1,500m events, while older athletes compete in races up to 3,000m on the track and 5,000m in cross country.
