From School Traffic to the Podium: João Cardoso's US Rise

A move to Orlando, beating the school drop-off line, and early victories at the classic Turkey Trot race.

Young runner João Cardoso's journey in the United States began for an unusual reason: beating the morning school drop-off line. What started as a simple family logistics solution quickly turned into major race victories and the launch of a youth running team.

João Cardoso's family planned their move to the United States in 2014 and made it official in December 2015 upon arriving in Orlando, Florida. At the time, João was only two years old and barely spoke Portuguese. The family's connection to the city was already rooted in sports: his father, Thiago, had completed the Disney Dopey Challenge twice (running the 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon), an experience that inspired their choice of a new home.

An unexpected solution to beat school traffic

João entered track and field while in first grade, around age 6 or 7, born out of practical necessity. The morning car line to drop kids off at school took nearly an hour every day. The family found a workaround through a school running club flyer: students enrolled in the program could be dropped off an hour early.

The young boy began running to avoid sitting idly in the car and quickly stood out among his peers. The first major confirmation of his talent came during the traditional Thanksgiving week race, the Turkey Trot. João won the school competition and took home the symbolic prize—a Thanksgiving turkey—a feat he repeated consecutively from first through fifth grade.

Healthy rivalry and a training breakthrough

In fifth grade, João started competing in more demanding interscholastic meets. For two years, he faced a consistent rival in local finals: a runner his age who was already competing on the national stage. That challenge fueled Thiago to design a more dedicated training regimen for his son starting in 2023.

João's progress caught the attention of other families, and even his rival eventually joined the training group. In 3,000-meter races, their fierce competition continued, driving both runners forward. The experience led Thiago to establish a sports training initiative that now coaches over 70 children across distances ranging from 400 meters to 5K races.
