Sea Rescue and the Real Value of Registration Forms

Poliana Moraes recalls the tension of a nighttime rescue and explains why emergency contact details save lives during races.

In an interview on STEMMA na Trilha, event producer Poliana Moraes recounts an athlete's disappearance at sea and emphasizes the critical importance of completing race registration details accurately.

Behind the scenes of any outdoor sports event, the line between celebration and emergency can be razor-thin. During her appearance on STEMMA na Trilha, seasoned event producer Poliana Moraes recalled one of the most harrowing moments of her career: the disappearance of a paddler in open water during a stage of the Brazilian Championship, underscoring the vital lesson of keeping athlete emergency records up to date.

The Tension of Disappearance and Arena Management

The incident took place near the conclusion of a canoeing festival. While the award stage and musical acts were already set up on the beach, sea conditions turned rough as night fell. While tallying the final returning vessels, the timing and rescue crew realized that one surf ski paddler was missing on the water.

Once the disappearance was confirmed, organizers had to act swiftly on two distinct fronts: immediate offshore search operations and crowd control at the venue arena. Poliana took on the challenging duty of managing competitors eager for the award ceremony without triggering widespread panic. In alignment with the governing sports federation, that division's ceremony and the post-race celebration were immediately called off to channel all resources into the rescue mission.

Sea Rescue and the Real Value of Registration Forms

The search brought together the Navy, local fishermen, volunteer boaters, and a team led by Gustavo, the event organizer. Maritime authorities temporarily suspended the nighttime search operations during the early morning hours due to hazardous sea conditions, leaving the entire crew on vigil awaiting dawn.

The Outcome on the Rocks and the Value of Medical Forms

With the first light of morning, the athlete was located alive. He had managed to take refuge on a rocky outcropping and waited out the night, having gone unseen earlier because he was wearing black gear in the dark. Gustavo executed the rescue back to the beach using a stand-up paddleboard.

As the athlete was transported for emergency medical care, the need for his registration and medical records became immediate. Poliana noted the immense relief of retrieving his profile from the database: it was his very first race, and he had filled out 100% of the requested information, including his medical background and active emergency contacts.

This case illustrates a persistent concern among organizers of trail running and outdoor endurance sports. Registering for an event is far more than simply selecting a t-shirt size; it serves as a critical safety safeguard. Leaving fields blank or listing impractical contacts—such as someone competing on the same course at that exact moment or out-of-service phone numbers—directly undermines emergency response times when accidents happen.
