Kilian Jornet Out of UTMB Due to Chronic Knee Injury

The four-time Chamonix ultramarathon champion will undergo surgery, putting his historic fifth title bid on hold.

Kilian Jornet has confirmed he will miss the UTMB start line in Chamonix due to a chronic knee injury that requires surgery. The Spaniard, who was aiming for an unprecedented fifth title, has not competed since dropping out of Western States.

The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) will see a major absence on the starting line in Chamonix. Spain's Kilian Jornet announced his withdrawal from the race due to a chronic knee injury. The runner will undergo surgery, with no established timeline yet for his return to competition.

Jornet has been sidelined from racing since June, when he had to drop out of the Western States. A four-time UTMB champion, he currently shares the men's victory record with Frenchman François D'Haene and was aiming for a fifth win to stand alone atop the history of the French ultramarathon.

Raised at altitude in the Pyrenees along the border of Spain, France, and Andorra, Kilian has built a legendary track record both on trails and in high-altitude mountaineering. Among his notable achievements are speed records on 8,000-meter peaks without supplemental oxygen, including Mount Everest.

Sponsored by Coros and co-founder of the gear brand NNormal, Jornet is now focusing his efforts on surgery and joint rehabilitation to eventually return to the mountain running circuit.
