In a conversation on the Stemma podcast, Álvaro José recalled the beginning of his career and the strong family influence that fostered his passion for journalism. Childhood memories and family heritage

Álvaro's relationship with major sports coverage began in the early years of his life. His father covered historic events such as the 1958 World Cup and was extensively mentioned in chronicles by Mário Filho in books like Viagem em torno de Pelé. From the 1962 World Cup, Álvaro holds a vivid memory of his preschool teacher listening on a transistor radio as Brazil defeated Spain with two goals by Amarildo.

In addition to the journalism inherited from his father, his hands-on experience came from his mother. Backyard basketball games and spending time at Esporte Clube Pinheiros—a major multi-sport club—encouraged Álvaro to practice various disciplines, including judo and basketball, while devouring the sports books and references he found at home.

Olympic sports as a passport to the world

A fascination with international travel served as the primary catalyst for his career choice. At a time when traveling abroad was a major logistical challenge and his father crossed continents on four-engine Super Constellation planes, Álvaro devised a strategy to stand out in the field.

Realizing that senior reporters dominated football coverage, he leveraged his broad knowledge of other disciplines to focus on Olympic and multi-sport events. The bet quickly paid off: in 1977, working for Rádio Bandeirantes while most reporters traveled only within South America, Álvaro flew to the former Yugoslavia to cover the FIBA Intercontinental Cup in Belgrade and Ljubljana—the first major milestone in a career that has now spanned visits to over 80 countries.
