Djenyfer Arnold Details Toll of Back-to-Back Races and Travel

The triathlete breaks down the physical toll of competing every seven days and explains why travel time does not count as recovery.

In an interview with Stemma Sports, Djenyfer Arnold explained the challenges of balancing back-to-back race weeks with base training. The triathlete revealed how grueling travel schedules undermined her recovery and prompted her to set firmer boundaries on her race calendar.

Maintaining consistent training while ensuring adequate rest is one of the greatest challenges in elite triathlon. In an interview with Stemma Sports, triathlete Djenyfer Arnold detailed how overlapping long-distance travel and racing on consecutive weekends disrupted her physical conditioning and muscular recovery.

The difference between 15-day and 7-day cycles

According to Djenyfer, planning worked efficiently when races were spaced two weeks apart. A 15-day window allowed for two post-race recovery days, about eight to nine days of solid training with good volume to preserve her base and physical durability, followed by pre-race rest days. The dynamic shifted drastically with weekly events—a pace that prevents necessary training load blocks and overtaxes an athlete's body.

Long-distance travel and the illusion of rest

Beyond closely spaced race dates, international logistics added significant physical strain. After competing in Caiobá, Brasília, Yokohama, and Quiberon—where she placed 13th in the sprint distance—her schedule took her to Chile, Germany, London, and Rio de Janeiro. Traveling from Chile to Germany alone took 30 hours.

Djenyfer pointed out that travel time is often mistakenly viewed as downtime, when in reality it causes further fatigue. Given the cumulative toll, the Brazilian athlete stated she does not intend to repeat such packed schedules, prioritizing long-term physical health and high-quality training instead.
