Robson Esteves' Path to the ABREE Presidency

Stints at multinationals like Volvo and Philips shaped the organization president's practical ESG vision.

Robson Esteves details his career trajectory from Volvo's truck plant in Brazil to leading ABREE. He explains how his multinational background established his approach to corporate sustainability and reverse logistics.

Robson Esteves, president of ABREE (Brazilian Association for the Recycling of Electronics and Home Appliances), spoke with Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast about his professional journey and the factors that shaped his approach to corporate sustainability. A native of Paraná, Esteves began his career at Volvo's truck manufacturing plant, where he was exposed to established environmental practices from its Swedish headquarters. The full episode also addresses topics such as greenwashing and communication challenges within the sector.

In the video above, Esteves recalls his business trips to Europe early in his career and explains how the business culture of those markets guided his subsequent moves. "Sweden is a country that is very advanced in what we now call ESG, right? So that stayed in my mind from way back then," he states.

Multinational background and arrival at ABREE

Following his experience in the automotive industry, Esteves worked at other multinationals, including Philips, Samsung, Nortel, and Schneider Electric. During these tenures, he observed how international headquarters, such as those in the Netherlands, were structuring environmental guidelines long before the concept of ESG became widespread across the corporate world.

For Esteves, leading ABREE emerged as a direct convergence of the experience gained across global operations. "So when this opportunity came along, it was almost like—I wouldn't call it a crowning achievement, but rather a coming together of so much I had experienced and could now put into practice," he highlights.

Entity structure and reverse logistics

With 15 years of operation, ABREE was founded by manufacturers to structure and fund reverse logistics in Brazil. The organization brings together 62 member companies and 214 brands. Esteves defines reverse logistics as the operational process dedicated to collecting, treating, and reinserting electronic waste into the circular economy.
