The Role of Parents in Swimming: Support, Limits, and Autonomy
Alexandre Indiani explains why interfering in practice hinders athlete development and advocates for clear boundaries between family and coach.
On the Natação Stemma podcast, swim coach Alexandre Indiani examines the ideal role of parents in youth athlete development. The veteran coach emphasizes the importance of offering emotional support while respecting the coaching staff's expertise.
The relationship between parents, athletes, and coaches is one of the most delicate dynamics in competitive youth swimming. During an appearance on the Natação Stemma podcast—in an episode that also touches on other aspects of athlete development—veteran coach Alexandre Indiani emphasized the need for parents to let their children solve their own problems and build maturity both in and out of the pool.
According to Indiani, overprotectiveness and direct interference in daily training hinder the development of autonomy and accountability. When consulted by athletes dreaming of studying and training in the United States, the coach often asks: "Are you going to bring your mother along?" Without learning how to manage their own challenges and frustrations early on, young swimmers struggle to handle the independent routine of a university or club abroad.
The doctor's appointment analogy
Indiani draws a direct parallel with the doctor-patient relationship to illustrate why second-guessing coaching methodology makes little sense. When a doctor prescribes an antibiotic for a throat infection, specifying a dosage every 12 hours for seven days, parents buy the medication and follow the instructions without questioning the specialist's medical judgment.
In sports, however, parents frequently second-guess the coach's training methods and decisions. Indiani stresses that coaches possess the knowledge and experience required to guide athletic development, whereas the family's essential role is nurturing: offering hugs, love, and emotional support, while leaving the training plans and pool deck routine to the professionals.
