How Bicycle Touring Shapes Alexandre Indiani's Mind

Swimming coach explains how bike trips, wild camping, and tough climbs build discipline by the pool.

Away from the pool deck, coach Alexandre Indiani finds self-therapy and physical challenge in bicycle touring and bikepacking. He shares stories of countryside trips, navigational hurdles, and the direct connection between discipline on two wheels and the high-performance mindset.

Beyond his demanding routine on the pool deck, veteran swimming coach Alexandre Indiani nurtures a longtime passion: bicycle touring. What began as daily commuting—including a four-year stretch in Belo Horizonte where he traveled exclusively on foot or by bike—quickly evolved into long-distance expeditions across Brazilian roads.

Self-Therapy and Planning in Wild Camping

Today, Indiani typically sets aside two periods each year to dedicate entirely to two-wheeled journeys. Among his standout milestones are two completions of the traditional Caminho da Fé pilgrimage route, riding from Águas da Prata to Aparecida. On a recent trip departing from Franca, tricky navigation through poorly marked sugarcane fields altered his original route, turning it into an independent four-day loop passing through towns like Ibiraci before returning to the start.

For the coach, cycling serves as self-therapy and a powerful tool for decompression. Bikepacking with wild camping requires self-reliance and meticulous organization: pitching camp far from busy roads, waking up at 5:00 a.m. to be rolling before 6:00 a.m., and managing nutrition, elevation changes, and rest throughout the journey.

The Mental Bridge Between the Climb and the Swim Set

This rugged life on the road translates directly to the high-performance sports mindset. During one expedition, Indiani turned a steep mountain pass into a structured hill-repeat workout: climbing and descending the incline six times, matching the effort of the roughly nine-minute ascent to an 800-meter swimming sprint, and the two-minute descent to a 200-meter pace effort.

The workout reinforced the importance of sticking to the plan. Battling fatigue on the fourth descent, committing to finish all six planned repetitions captured the exact mental grit required both on the open road and on the starting block. With bicycle touring booming across the country, Indiani encourages newcomers to overcome initial hesitation and explore local routes and trails.
