Santiago Ascenço Previews Ironman 70.3 Curitiba Course

Ahead of his 69th half-Ironman, the triathlete breaks down the technical course, elite contenders, and racing alongside his son.

Santiago Ascenço shared his thoughts on the Ironman 70.3 Curitiba course ahead of race day. The veteran triathlete highlighted the technical bike segments, elite competition, and the thrill of racing alongside his son.

With a long history in Brazilian triathlon and a constant presence in Paraná races since 1999, when he competed in the traditional Sesc Caiobá, Santiago Ascenço kicked off his season at Ironman 70.3 Curitiba. Beyond his return to the state capital, the race marks a major milestone for the veteran: his 69th half-Ironman start.

Technical sections and extra caution on the bike

After scouting the course, Santiago praised the quality of the asphalt and the scenic route, but warned athletes to prioritize safety during the bike leg. According to him, the new course features steep climbs and descents that demand extra caution.

The key danger zones are two fast descents that lead into sharp turns. For the triathlete, excitement must not override prudence on these sections: taking unnecessary risks is not worth it when any handling mistake could end a racer's day.

Rising amateur talent and racing alongside his son

Competing in the age-group division, Santiago celebrated the steady influx of new athletes battling for top spots at every race. For him, staying healthy and competitive after decades of daily commitment is a privilege that also inspires athletes at his coaching consultancy.

The Curitiba race also features a special milestone: his son's name on the start list. After overcoming a recent injury that disrupted the end of last season, the younger Ascenço completed a solid training block. In good spirits, Santiago admitted he is rooting for his son to beat him out on the course.

Elite favorites and women's growing presence in sports

In the professional field, Santiago singled out Miguel Hidalgo as the top contender to beat, provided he avoids mechanical and physical setbacks throughout the day. Despite the challenging elevation profile, fast bike splits and a rapid run are expected to determine the remaining podium spots.

Coinciding with International Women's Day weekend, the triathlete also highlighted the expanding presence of women in endurance events and training groups. For Santiago, the dedication of female athletes is inspiring and underscores the transformative power of endurance training in both personal and family life.
