Run Battles and Rain at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo

André Lopes breaks down his runner-up finish in São Paulo, the run chase, and cautious cycling on wet roads.

In an interview on Café com Tri, André Lopes breaks down the intense run battle at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo. The triathlete reflects on racing on slick asphalt and his decisive chase in the final kilometers.

The battle at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo tested not only the physical fitness of the professional field, but also tactical precision and risk management. During an appearance on the Café com Tri podcast, André Lopes recounted his runner-up finish, highlighting how small details in transition and pacing shaped the podium in the Brazilian metropolis.

The Run Chase and T2 Details

After a grueling bike leg to neutralize Reinaldo Colucci's solo breakaway, a pack of about six athletes arrived together at the second transition (T2). Quickness made an immediate difference: Toad executed a strategic sockless transition and instantly opened a 15-second gap over his rivals.

Across the first half of the half marathon, the pace was blistering. André caught Taccone around the 5 km mark and clocked the first 10 km in roughly 35 minutes, keeping Toad firmly in sight. However, through the second half of the course, Toad maintained his tempo to close out the run in 1:13:30, while André finished his split in 1:14:30.

The race lead shifted in the closing stretch. Colucci, who had led for much of the day, began to fade after his solo effort on the bike. Toad took over the front with 4 km remaining, while André managed to pass Reinaldo less than a kilometer from the finish arch, securing second place in an all-out effort.

Rain and Cautious Riding on São Paulo Roads

Rain added an extra layer of technical complexity to the race. Wet asphalt, sharp turns, bridges, and expansion joints along the Marginal expressway demanded conservative bike handling. Mindful of a severe crash suffered at Ironman Frankfurt in Germany, André chose a defensive approach on downhills and U-turns to steer clear of accidents.

Caution over slick pavement and unfamiliarity with the course's road joints slowed overall bike splits compared to previous years. Despite extreme exhaustion that left him unable to speak right after crossing the finish line, the triathlete celebrated a standout performance in front of the local crowd.
