From Speed Swimming to Long-Distance Triathlon

Ruiter Silva's transition from Paralympic swimming, where he competed in speed events (50 and 100 meters) and medaled at Rio 2016, to triathlon was a huge leap. After more than 10 years dedicated to swimming, he started triathlon in late 2021, after the Tokyo Paralympics. Ruiter emphasizes the need for patience, something he has learned over time, and the importance of continuous evolution. For him, triathlon is a "constant honeymoon," passionate about the lifestyle and dynamic nature of the sport. He also notes how interviews with other athletes help him shorten his learning curve.

The Art of Adaptation in Paralympic Triathlon: Innovation and Inspiration

Paralympic triathlon is a relatively new sport, introduced to the circuit in 2016. Races are contested at sprint distance with no drafting allowed in cycling. Ruiter details the adaptations to his equipment, such as a TT bicycle with a customized front end for his arm to rest on and a gear and braking system controlled by only one hand. For athletes with more severe disabilities, such as wheelchair users, handcycles are used.

He invites the public to learn more about Paralympic sports, which he describes as "captivating," not because of the disability itself, but because of the capacity for adaptation that leads to results "as good as the original." The competitiveness is extremely high, with athletes like Jorge (who had an entire arm amputated) demonstrating creative solutions for transitions. The performance and dedication of Paralympic athletes are an example of high performance.

Focus on Los Angeles and the Importance of Race Experience

Although competing in Ironman 70.3 Brasília, Ruiter's main goal is a medal at the Los Angeles Paralympic Games. He views races like the 70.3 as a crucial way to gain experience and familiarity, feeling the anxiety and dynamics of competition. Coach Cati has been fundamental to his development, especially in cycling and running, which are newer disciplines for him. For the Brasília race, Ruiter's focus is not just on being fast in one discipline, but on delivering a "complete triathlon", balancing swimming, cycling, and running for a cohesive and strong performance. Remaining healthy and injury-free is an essential pillar of his training.

Behind the Scenes: Music, Idols, and Family

In a quick-fire Q&A with the hosts, Ruiter revealed a more personal side. His music playlist is eclectic, even including songs from his daughter's animated movies, which motivate him during tough times. He shared a special identification with the character Nemo, who had a smaller fin, as it was the first time he saw himself represented. After races, the reward is a good pizza with lots of cheese. In football (soccer), he supports Cruzeiro. He has cycled long distances, with his personal record around 220 km. Among his idols, Ruiter mentions Ayrton Senna, Kobe Bryant, and Jorge Hidalgo, admiring their ability to overcome challenges and pursue the impossible in sports. His family, especially his wife Daniele, supports him, although his mother still feels the anxiety of competitions.

Ruiter Silva's journey is a testament to the strength of the sporting spirit and innovation. His dedication to transforming challenges into opportunities, combined with rigorous discipline and family support, makes him a benchmark not only in Paralympic triathlon but also a true example of high performance and resilience for any athlete.
