The Transition to Professionalism and Lessons from Brasília

Rafael Câmara began his journey in professional triathlon, making his debut in Brasília. He describes the experience as an intense phase of learning. The main difference in the professional scenario is the starting dynamic, which demands high intensity and immediate tactical positioning. One of the biggest challenges is avoiding isolation in the swim.

"Losing the group at the start can be costly," explains Rafael, emphasizing that if an athlete doesn't position themselves well at the first buoy, they risk doing the race alone from that point on. Swimming, although it doesn't win the race, can certainly lose it, especially in a professional setting where seconds are extremely expensive. In Brasília, the need to "chase the group" on the bike highlighted the importance of a more tactical start; a starting error can cost the entire race.

Strategic Swimming and Training Adaptations

After his experience in Brasília, Rafael implemented significant changes in his training. Swimming became the first discipline of the day, performed with a more rested and focused body. He also incorporated specific sets that simulate the intense pace of the race start, preparing his body for lactate production and the high intensity that a professional start demands.

This approach aims to accustom the body to being prepared for "attacks" and intense competition from the very first meters. The goal is to ensure he can remain competitive while the fight for positions is at its peak.

Focus on the Marathon and Pre-Race Routine

Rafael emphasizes the importance of the final third of the marathon in Ironman, where "things start to get very complicated" and where the race is often decided. To address this, his long running workouts now include a progressive characteristic, finishing the last 40 minutes above his target marathon pace, simulating the actual race fatigue.

In the days leading up to the competition, Rafael's routine consists of rest, good nutrition, and light workouts just to maintain routine and socialize. He doesn't like to over-visualize the race in the final days, preferring to experience it and enjoy each moment, especially in Jurerê, which he considers "home." To deal with anxiety, he focuses on breathing, listens to music he enjoys, and does a good warm-up in the water before the start, which helps calm him down.

Race Nutrition and a Champion's Dreams

Rafael details his nutritional strategy for Ironman: on the bike, 130g/h of carbohydrates and 800mg of sodium, with caffeine after the third hour; in the marathon, 90g/h of carbohydrates and 600mg of sodium, administering caffeine as needed.

For those starting in triathlon, his advice is clear: "Do your best with the condition you're in." He emphasizes the importance of not comparing oneself to other athletes or equipment, but rather living the experience of the sport and enjoying each step of the process. His biggest dream as a triathlete is to impact people, showcasing the sport as a tool for change, and as a professional, to be an Ironman champion.

Rafael Câmara's journey is a testament to the dedication and strategic intelligence required for high-performance triathlon. His lessons on adaptation, resilience, and passion for the sport serve as inspiration for any athlete looking to push their limits, whether in swimming, cycling, running, or life.
