Ricardo Capriotti and the global launch of the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2

Huawei is making a major move in the dedicated running smartwatch market with the global debut of the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2, scheduled for February 26 in Madrid. The lineup had not received an update in five years and marks a new chapter for the manufacturer in the high-performance sports segment.

To reinforce its positioning, the brand gathered international journalists for a press conference featuring marathon world-record holder Eliud Kipchoge, now an official global ambassador for the company after ending his previous partnership. The event in Spain also welcomed track-and-field legends such as Olympic medalist Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, with Ricardo Capriotti attending as the sole Brazilian journalist.

Return of the Mizuno Atenas Circuit to the national calendar

One of Brazilian road running's most traditional race series is getting a major refresh in 2026. Mizuno has reclaimed the naming rights for the Iguana Sports project, newly rebranded as the Circuito Mizuno Atenas, reviving the historic partnership first established in 2010 and 2011. The series expects to welcome around 32,000 runners across three progressive stages designed for continuous athletic development.

The circuit's schedule has been strategically organized throughout the year: the Run Faster stage takes place on March 15 (5K, 10K, 15K, and 21K); Run Stronger on June 21 (6K, 12K, 18K, and 25K); and Run Longer wraps up the season on October 18 (7K, 14K, 21K, and 28K), offering intermediate race distances for structured endurance conditioning.

100% Você Circuit expands into the Southeast

Led by the Marques family—musician Bell Marques alongside his sons Rafa and Pipo—the 100% Você circuit announced its expansion into Brazil's Southeast region following successful events across the Northeast, including João Pessoa. The event blends road racing with lifestyle entertainment tailored for the running community.

The tour's first stop in the Southeast will be in Vitória (Espírito Santo) on April 13, with registrations now open. Shortly after, Rio de Janeiro will host the race on April 23, solidifying the circuit's nationwide growth strategy.

Smart Fit and Urbia partner at Ibirapuera Park

Fitness chain Smart Fit has partnered with park concessionaire Urbia to establish a presence inside Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo. Starting in March, the gym brand will offer free public workouts and install workout stations within the park. The initiative builds upon a similar project launched at Villa-Lobos Park through Orla TotalPass.

The move has sparked active discussions across the local sports community regarding the balance between corporate brand activations, public infrastructure upkeep, and preserving the democratic, open-access nature of urban public parks.

Pepe Fiamoncini breaks manual treadmill Guinness World Record

Brazilian ultramarathoner Pepe Fiamoncini, 35, set a new official Guinness World Record by running 188 km in 24 hours on a non-motorized manual treadmill. The endurance challenge took place on February 4 and 5 at Rio Academia Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro.

Unlike standard motorized treadmills, curved manual treadmills rely entirely on the runner's own propulsion with every stride, requiring immense physical endurance and mental fortitude across the equivalent of more than four back-to-back marathons.

Rio Marathon adds extra entries and returns to its classic route

Organizers of the Rio Marathon announced an additional release of 5,000 bibs for the 42K distance, raising the total cap to 20,000 marathon finishers. The course has also returned to its iconic coastal layout, starting at Praia da Reserva in Recreio dos Bandeirantes and finishing at Aterro do Flamengo.

Featuring just 21 turns over the entire 42.195 km distance, the scenic course hugs the coastline through São Conrado, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, and Botafogo. Reducing narrow bottlenecks through the historic downtown area in the early miles will provide smoother pacing and flow for participants.

Tokyo Marathon confirms stacked elite field for World Marathon Majors opener

The 2026 World Marathon Majors season kicks off with a star-studded elite field confirmed for the Tokyo Marathon. The men's race includes top contenders such as Alexander Mutiso, Timothy Kiplagat, and Vincent Ngetich, all boasting personal bests in the 2:02 to 2:03 range.

On the women's side, the start line will feature world-class runners including Kenya's Brigid Kosgei and Ethiopia's Hawi Feysa, setting the stage for aggressive paces in the 2:14 to 2:20 range through the streets of Japan's capital.

Centauro and Olympikus collaborate on exclusive Corre 4 colorway

To celebrate Centauro's 45th anniversary and Olympikus's 50th, the two brands have launched a special, limited edition of the popular daily trainer Corre 4. The shoe features a symbolic tricolor palette: white representing clarity of purpose, red symbolizing athletic passion, and green reflecting an outdoor connection, available across select retail stores and online.

Race calendar additions: Osasco Half Marathon and Forrest Gump Run

Two new events are joining the Greater São Paulo racing calendar. On February 22, Osasco will host its inaugural Half Marathon with 21K, 10K, and 5K courses visiting the city's historic landmarks. Later, on March 29, Villa-Lobos Park will host the official Forrest Gump themed race, offering a 2K walk and a 5K run.

Community connections: singles runner channel and the Pizza Run

In the digital realm, running media page I Love Corrida launched a dedicated community networking channel designed to connect single runners who share early-morning training schedules and weekend race routines.

Meanwhile, pizzeria chain La Brasserie introduced the Pizza Run challenge: runners who track a pizza-slice-shaped GPS route on Strava and tag the brand receive R$ 5 in discounts for every kilometer logged, blending creative GPS art with casual dining.

The chaotic history of the 1904 Olympic Marathon

Among track and field's historical curiosities, the marathon at the St. Louis 1904 Olympic Games remains one of the most bizarre events ever recorded. Held under blistering heat and across dust-choked dirt roads, the race offered only a single official water station along the entire route.

Eventual gold medalist Thomas Hicks crossed the finish line in a state of near collapse after his handlers administered doses of strychnine—a toxic rat poison commonly used as a stimulant at the time—mixed with brandy. Another competitor, Fred Lorz, crossed the line first but was promptly disqualified after admitting he had hitched a ride in an automobile for roughly 11 miles of the course.

Grandfather and granddaughter make Boston Marathon history

American runner Carlos Sanches, 67, secured his qualification for the Boston Marathon after 37 attempts spanning 17 years of dedicated training. Sanches took up running at age 50 and earned his qualifying spot at the Mountains to Beach Marathon in California with a finish time of 3:50:49.

The milestone carries special family significance: his 23-year-old granddaughter, Mia, also earned a Boston Qualifier with a time of 3:14:00. Together, they are set to become the first grandfather-granddaughter duo to run the world's most storied marathon in the same edition.
