Pietra Meneghini Details Progress and Ironman Focus

With a qualification for Nice and an Ironman Brazil debut ahead, the Brazilian triathlete reflects on her long-distance breakthrough.

In an interview with Stemma Sports, professional triathlete Pietra Meneghini discussed her physical development, demanding training schedule, and goals for Ironman Brazil and the 70.3 World Championship in Nice.

With significant podium finishes under her belt, including third place at Ironman 70.3 Brasília and second in Aracaju, Pietra Meneghini has established herself among the professional ranks of Brazilian long-distance triathlon. In an interview recorded during preparations for Ironman 70.3 Curitiba, the 23-year-old athlete highlighted the physical and tactical maturity that allowed her to move up her full-distance debut by two years.

From Handball to Professional Breakthrough

Before mastering endurance racing, Pietra began her sports journey in handball at age six, eventually competing in tournaments across Spain and Sweden. Recognizing the sport's limited structural support, she shifted to road running and, following physiological testing at 16, transitioned to triathlon through family encouragement and specialist guidance.

Her transition into the long-distance elite took place under coach Cris Solak alongside foundational backing, including a project led by Luiz Oddi and government sponsorship via Proesporte Paraná in 2022. The initial plan called for an Ironman-distance debut only in 2028, but recent physiological testing conducted with conditioning specialist André Peres demonstrated performance metrics compatible with 226 km race pacing, accelerating the timeline.

Run Progression and Bike Refinement

Known for her power on the bike, Pietra adapted recent training blocks to strike a balance across all three disciplines. Dialing in the run required temporary adjustments to cycling volume, leading to strong half-marathon splits such as 1:27 in Rio de Janeiro and 1:33 in the extreme heat of Aracaju.

Her technical handling and mental fortitude on the tarmac were developed riding with traditional road cycling pelotons in Curitiba on challenging routes like the Estrada da Serpente toward Tunas do Paraná. That background provided the autonomy needed to tackle long highway rides and regulate competitive paces independently.

College Routine, Pressure, and Eyes on Nice

Balancing double-session training days with the final stages of her on-campus Physical Education degree at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Pietra has worked consistently with a sports psychologist since 2022 to navigate competitive pressure and maintain mental clarity on race day.

Beyond her domestic schedule and her Ironman Brazil debut, her main international objective of the year is the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France. Featuring a bike course with substantial elevation gain and technical descents, the French race plays directly to the triathlete's key strengths.
