On the traditional "Roda Presa" segment of the Café com Tri podcast, a space dedicated to quirky stories and bizarre moments experienced in competitions, coach Wanderley Santos shared a recurring ordeal from his races: frequent bouts of nausea and vomiting during swimming events.
Maximum intensity and anxiety at the start line
According to Wanderley, the nausea usually hits right in the first few meters of the race. He explained that he tends to start at a very high intensity, and that combining this aggressive pace with stress, anxiety, and pre-race coffee triggers constant nausea until he rounds the first buoy.
Beyond the aggressive start, the problem strikes again whenever the pace drops or at the very end of the event. Wanderley recalled an embarrassing moment during the Volta do Parcel race: upon exiting the water and stepping onto the sand in front of cheering spectators, he ended up throwing up right in front of the crowd before managing to transition into the run.
