In an exclusive interview, Miguel Hidalgo reflects on his World Triathlon season and discusses the physical recovery hurdles he faced after falling ill. The Brazilian athlete also details the setbacks at the Grand Final and outlines his preparation for the upcoming cycle.

Following the conclusion of the World Triathlon Championship Series Grand Final in Pontevedra, Brazilian triathlete Miguel Hidalgo spoke candidly about the highs and lows of his sporting year. Reflecting on a tough season and recovery hurdles

After a consistent first half of the year, highlighted by two podium finishes and a fifth place between May and June, Miguel saw his routine change dramatically after falling ill ahead of WTCS London. Lingering recovery issues hampered much of the subsequent weeks, denting both his confidence and training performance. Although he considered ending his season early to reset his body, the buffer of points built early in the year guaranteed his spot in the world ranking's top five.

Race strategy and the bike chain issue

At the start of the swim, the triathlete chose to position himself on the outside of the buoy to reduce physical contact within the main pack. The biggest setback of the race came during the bike leg, when his chain dropped and got wedged in the frame. Despite the frustration caused by the mechanical issue and being far from top form, Miguel fought through the final meters of the run, pulling off crucial overtakes to salvage fifth place in the overall standings.

Overcoming adversity and the support of Brazilian fans

Reflecting on the start of his journey in a country without a long-standing tradition in the sport, Hidalgo emphasized that he has overcome even tougher moments in his career and remains confident in his recovery. The presence of Brazilian fans and junior and U23 athletes along the course provided an extra boost to keep fighting, serving as an example of resilience for the next generation.

Planning for the season finale and the year ahead

With the Grand Final behind him, the focus now turns to stringing together consistent weeks of physical conditioning and altitude training. Miguel and his team are evaluating whether to compete in World Triathlon Cup events, but his priority is arriving in peak shape for the Abu Dhabi race, which counts toward the next championship and marks the start of the new cycle.
