Luis Ohde Details New Training and Ironman 70.3 Curitiba

Racing at home, the Brazilian triathlete discusses his new Spanish coach, managing asthma, and the course's most critical sections.

Ahead of Ironman 70.3 Curitiba, pro triathlete Luis Ohde reflects on his new training methodology and managing asthma. He also warns competitors about the hazardous downhill sections heading toward Passaúna.

Competing in his own backyard offers undeniable logistical perks, and Luis Ohde knows how to make the most of that edge. On the eve of Ironman 70.3 Curitiba, the Brazilian pro triathlete highlighted the comfort of sleeping in his own bed, sticking to his nutrition routine, and skipping the usual wear and tear of traveling with a bike box.

New methodology and physical breakthroughs

His early-season build-up included weeks of training in Spain alongside Bruna Mahn. More than just logging miles abroad, that stint marked a major technical overhaul. After grappling with performance issues since Ironman São Paulo, Ohde made a coaching switch and adopted the methodology of a Spanish trainer linked to top global athletes like Hayden Wilde and Tadej Pogačar's UAE Team Emirates.

This pursuit of progress goes hand in hand with managing his health. Ohde lives with asthma, a cyclical chronic condition that resurfaced to hinder his performance over recent seasons. His main goal is to keep respiratory and physical discomfort in check so he can translate the intensity and consistency built in training directly to race day.

Warning on technical descents near Passaúna

With extensive knowledge of the local roads, Ohde flagged the sections demanding the highest skill on the bike leg. While the highway and much of the rural sector allow for a steady pace, the approach to the Passaúna reservoir requires heightened focus. About 7 km out, two steep descents feature corners that tighten abruptly mid-turn, requiring early braking and pinpoint cornering lines.

Race dynamics and season goals

In Ohde's assessment of the men's pro race, Miguel Hidalgo stands out as the frontrunner likely to drive a blazing pace on the bike, averaging around 41 km/h. Behind him, a fast chase pack is expected featuring athletes like Reinaldo Colucci and competitors from Santa Catarina—the exact group where Ohde aims to position himself.

His plan for the year includes racing every stop on the Ironman circuit in Brazil, aiming to notch at least one standout performance on the calendar. The season also features collaborative projects, such as a trail running training camp in Patagonia alongside Bruna Mahn.
