The overall amateur champion in Aracaju shares how he transitioned to the pro field after a decade in triathlon.

After winning the overall amateur title at IRONMAN 70.3 Aracaju, Lucas Cabral makes his professional debut at the Curitiba race. The triathlete reflects on his ten-year journey, high-intensity training in Northeast Brazil, and the challenges of stepping up to the elite level.

Lucas Cabral arrives at the Nubank Ultravioleta IRONMAN 70.3 Curitiba marking a major turning point in his career: his official debut in the professional category. A decade of evolution to the elite

The transition to the professional field caps a ten-year journey in the sport. Before moving up to long-distance events, Lucas built his foundation over nearly two years in sprint and Olympic-distance races. His middle-distance triathlon debut came at Challenge Brasília, followed by 70.3 Maceió.

Over the years, the triathlete accumulated impressive amateur overall results, including podium finishes at IRONMAN 70.3 Maceió and Fortaleza, as well as full-distance experience in Santa Catarina in 2022—where he braved rain and extreme cold to cross the finish line with what was then his personal-best half marathon. His victory in Aracaju the previous year served as the catalyst to solidify his move up to the pro division.

Higher intensity and heat adaptation

Coached by Sid, Lucas adjusted his preparation dynamics to match the demands of the elite field. The main shift was not a drastic increase in overall training hours, but rather a significant boost in session intensity.

Training in Northeast Brazil, hydration management and mineral replacement became crucial parts of his routine. In the hot climate, the athlete incorporated long sessions during peak heat hours to condition his body for severe exertion—a strategy that served as a testing ground for the pace demanded in the pro ranks.

Expectations in Curitiba and life off the course

On the Curitiba course, accumulated elevation and unpredictable weather demand caution and tactical race management from the gun. Excitement is high among competitors for the debut of this route on the race calendar.

Like many athletes transitioning to the elite ranks, Lucas balances his training volume with his professional career. Alongside his wife, he manages the sports nutrition brand Flex Energy, balancing production and entrepreneurship with the rigorous dedication required to compete at the highest level of triathlon.
