From Law to Goldsmithing: Lu Cachem's Early Path

Before triathlon and sports jewelry, the designer balanced law school with goldsmithing classes.

Lu Cachem reflects on her early connection to sports and a lifelong passion for jewelry design. In an interview with Se Liga Nelas, she shares how she balanced law school with goldsmithing before making a full career transition.

A Lifelong Passion for Jewelry and Legal Training

If someone had told Lu Cachem in her late twenties that she would complete multiple Ironman races and run a sports jewelry brand, she would have met it with utter disbelief. Although sports had always been part of her routine growing up in Rio de Janeiro—swimming, surfing, and playing handball—triathlons and long-distance running were nowhere in her early plans, especially since she disliked running.

Her connection to jewelry, however, started early. At 20, while attending law school, Lu decided to take a goldsmithing course simply as a hobby and out of fascination with the craft. Working by hand with metals and gemstones ignited a latent calling, nearly steering her away from law right around graduation.

Choosing Law and Shelving a Dream

In the final stretch of her degree, Lu even took part in a selection process at traditional jeweler Amsterdam Sauer to work in the brand's gemstone museum. However, the momentum and investment in her legal career ultimately won out when making the decision.

With an established internship track and the pressure for career stability, Lu chose to practice law. Her fascination with jewelry and artisan metalworking was put on hold, later providing the foundation for her success in designing endurance sports jewelry.
