From Handball to Marathons: Lu Cachem's Running Journey
After her second pregnancy, Lu Cachem rediscovered her athletic drive on the road, completing nine marathons before taking on triathlon.
Before designing iconic endurance jewelry and taking on triathlons, Lu Cachem rebuilt her athletic routine from scratch. Discover the athlete's journey from alternating two-minute runs and one-minute walks to finishing nine marathons.
Lu Cachem's connection with sports began long before triathlon and long-distance racing. During her youth in Rio de Janeiro, she played handball for Colégio Marista and later represented the Law School team and the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) varsity team in state and interstate tournaments. Her intense team-training routine was interrupted after graduation, marriage, and her move to São Paulo, a period during which physical activity was limited to conventional weight training.
The turning point came after the birth of her second child. Facing postpartum complications, a temporary hiatus from her legal career, and challenges losing weight, Lu decided to seek out a more dynamic activity to accelerate the process. Living in Alphaville, in Greater São Paulo, she joined a gym running group around age 34.
Early Steps and Reigniting the Competitive Drive
Her start in the sport was gradual and demanded patience. Unable to maintain a continuous pace, her initial routine relied on the classic walk-run method: running for two minutes and walking for one. As her conditioning improved, participating in road races rekindled the competitive spirit that had lain dormant since her college handball days.
Her official debut came in a 5K race in Alphaville. The starting-line atmosphere and the thrill of racing against the clock and fellow runners turned the habit into a lifelong passion. Guided by a coach with a triathlon background, Lu quickly increased her mileage and stepped up to longer distances.
The Transition to 26.2 Miles and Relay Races
Progress came quickly: from 5K to the half marathon (13.1 miles) and on to extreme endurance challenges. Even before moving into triathlon, Lu completed nine marathons and regularly took part in major long-distance relay races, including the traditional Volta à Ilha in Florianópolis and Maresias-Bertioga along the São Paulo coast.
Although swimming was already part of her routine and she would later enter multisport events, long-distance running established itself as her true athletic passion—proving it is never too late to start over and build a solid foundation in endurance sports.
