On Natação Stemma, hosts Samir Barel and Wanderley Santos welcome a prominent guest: Flávia Delaroli. A Journey in the Water: From the Countryside to the Olympics

Flávia's swimming journey began by chance as a child, following in the footsteps of her older brothers in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais. The unique system of USIPA, with buses that took children to the club, facilitated her access to the sport. Although she initially didn't see herself as a top athlete, her love for travel and passion for victory shaped her path. At 15, she made the courageous decision to move to the United States alone to train with Michael Lohberg in Colorado Springs, marking the beginning of her serious dedication to high-performance sports.

At the time, Brazilian swimming valued long-distance events more, but Flávia excelled in speed. With the support of her coach Robertinho and the guidance of physical trainers like Alfredo Caseta, she revolutionized her training, focusing on strength and specificity. She was able to leg-press 500 kg, during an experimental era for training methodologies. This approach was a game-changer, transforming her performance and preparing her for the Athens 2004 Olympics, her first Olympic cycle, and then for 2008.

Challenges and Lessons Beyond the Pool

The life of an elite athlete is not without its challenges. Flávia speaks about the emotional pressure and mental fatigue that prevented her from reaching her best performance in one of the Olympic cycles, despite meeting the qualifying standard. The experience made her value the importance of psychological balance.

A significant episode was the accidental use of a nasal spray containing a prohibited substance in 2012. Despite it being a continuous-use medication and unintentional, she received a three-month suspension. This event, though emotionally devastating, reinforced her resilience and the understanding that an athlete's responsibility is absolute.

Reflecting on her career, Flávia highlights the concept of the "Cobra Effect", a metaphor that illustrates when metrics overshadow the main objective. In sports, athletes can become attached to routines or superstitions, losing focus on the greater purpose. She cites the example of Bruno Fratus, who avoids handshakes before races to 'maintain energy,' showing how athletes seek to control what they can in a highly unpredictable environment.

From Athlete to Nutritionist: A New Mission

Flávia's transition to sports nutrition was a natural outgrowth of her experience. Initially interested in maternal and child nutrition, her passion for sports guided her to work with youth and adult athletes. Her Olympic experience gives her unique authority and empathy, allowing her to understand the physical and emotional nuances of her patients. She shares stories of athletes who, upon discovering their physiological deficiencies (such as her own with vasovagal syncope or the need for an asthma inhaler), transform their performance.

Her work focuses on food education, teaching young athletes to understand their bodies and the importance of food as a contributor to performance and well-being. For Flávia, food should be seen as a tool to build the life one desires, not as the primary focus. She emphasizes that individualization is key: each athlete has a unique physiology, and what works for one may not work for another. The health professional, she says, must first listen and understand the athlete's context before proposing solutions.

Life Reflections

Flávia Delaroli's main lesson is an invitation to reflect on the "why" behind our actions. Whether in sports, nutrition, or life in general, understanding our motivation and objectives is crucial for aligning choices and building the person we want to be. It's a journey of self-knowledge, persistence, and, above all, choosing what aligns with our values and ethics, as she has always strived to do in her brilliant career.
