In the latest episode of the Stemma Podcast, hosts Fabio Bessa and Thiago Calamaro welcomed the inspiring athlete Fábio Jesus, affectionately known as the "Warrior of the Sertão". His life story, marked by overcoming immense challenges, culminated in him becoming the best Brazilian finisher at the 100th edition of the São Silvestre, in addition to being a two-time South American half-marathon champion and an athlete sponsored by Adidas and the Brazilian Army. Fábio shares how discipline, gratitude, and resilience were key to transforming a reality of hardship into a promising future in elite athletics.
A Journey of Struggle and Triumph
Fábio Jesus's story begins in rural Bahia, in Monte Santo, where a humble childhood led him to run barefoot and without resources. At 15, encouraged by his cousin Joelton, he participated in his first race, the Ivanildo Dias Trophy, winning barefoot and earning R$300 – more than his weekly salary at the time. This event was a turning point, revealing the potential that awaited him. At 17, he became a father and left his studies to work on a farm, digging holes and caring for animals for five years. In 2019, a job opportunity in garbage collection in São Paulo arose, and Fábio moved to the capital, where he was welcomed by Ivanildo, who became his fundamental mentor and support.
The night work as a collector, which involved running 20 to 25 km daily with weight, served as involuntary training. This period was crucial for his physical endurance, but it also brought stress injuries. His dedication caught the attention of Elvis, his coach, with whom the initial relationship was challenging due to the demanding work and training schedule. Fábio would train after night shifts, taking crowded subways from the East Zone to Morumbi, pursuing results that seemed impossible. Patience and perseverance were essential for Fábio and Elvis to align.
Even after winning medals in South American and Pan-American championships, Fábio did not receive proper recognition or support from the club where he trained, forcing him to juggle high-performance sports with his garbage collection job. Help came from the collection company, which released him for travel, and later, from Adidas sponsorship and inclusion in the PAA program of the Brazilian Army, which offers support to international-level athletes. These achievements allowed Fábio to leave his work as a collector and dedicate himself fully to athletics.
Recent Achievements and Race Strategies
The 100th São Silvestre was a highlight in Fábio Jesus's career. With an unprecedented focus on the race, he and his team planned a pace to finish in 44 minutes, but the race dynamics, with its downhill start and the famous Brigadeiro stretch, required adaptation. Fábio described the race as "very tense," where the strategy of not matching the strong early pace of runners like Wilson was vital. Despite failing to get hydration at the 10km mark, a critical moment, Fábio maintained his strength and finished as the top Brazilian, in third place overall, with a time of 45:06.
Immediately after the São Silvestre, Fábio shone at the Corrida de Reis in Cuiabá, breaking a nine-year streak by winning the race and overcoming Kenyan dominance. This victory highlighted his recovery and focus. In the half marathon, a distance where he considers himself a "resilient" athlete, Fábio excels, being a two-time South American champion with his best time of 1h02'09", achieved in Rio de Janeiro. His transition to the half marathon was a challenge, as he initially felt stronger in the 10km, but his coach convinced him of his potential, leading to significant results.
Training Routine, Sponsorships, and Nutrition of an Elite Athlete
Currently, Fábio Jesus's training routine is intense and strategic. He maintains a weekly volume of 180 to 200 km, with three days dedicated to speed workouts. Fábio uses locations like the "Biologia," a famous uphill climb in São Paulo, to develop strength and endurance, replacing traditional weight training. His diet includes coffee, couscous, and the strategic use of gels and Palatinose during races and longer training sessions. The move to Osasco optimized his routine, allowing for morning workouts at 8 am, instead of exercising late at night after work.
In addition to Adidas and the Brazilian Army, Fábio receives support from various other sponsors, including Sport Nutrition Suplementos, Mom Bora, Prime Run (which includes his physiotherapist Renan), and Popa Norte (açaí). This network of support is fundamental for him to fully dedicate himself to the sport and pursue new challenges.
Inspiration, Values, and Future Dreams
Fábio Jesus is an example that patience, willpower, and respect are pillars for success. In the "Momento Z2" segment, he became emotional recalling his childhood as an adopted child, the difficulties in studying, and the importance of his mother's support. His advice for young people is clear: "don't give up on your dreams, study, and respect your parents". He emphasizes that recognition and success are the fruits of a long and arduous process, not shortcuts. Fábio is inspired by great names like Marilson Gomes dos Santos and Núbia, a compatriot who also overcame adversity to reach the top.
With the São Silvestre and the title of top Brazilian finisher on his resume, Fábio Jesus is now aiming high: he dreams of winning the São Silvestre and, the ultimate goal for every athlete, participating in the Olympic Games. With his marathon debut approaching, Fábio is determined to break records and further inspire people with his incredible story of dedication and resilience.
