Dylan Nortjé: Brazilian Heat and Kona, Nice Dreams in Aracaju
The South African triathlete shares his impressions of Brazil and his ambitious plans for the future of triathlon.
In an exclusive interview with Stemma Sports, South African triathlete Dylan Nortjé reveals the reasons behind his participation in the Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70.3 Aracaju. He discusses adapting to the hot climate, his perspective on the competition, and his major goals for upcoming seasons, including slots for Nice and Kona.
In special coverage of the Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70.3 Aracaju 2025, Stemma Sports spoke with South African triathlete Dylan Nortjé. In a relaxed chat with presenter Fabio Bessa, Nortjé shared his first impressions of Brazil and the reasons that brought him to the Sergipian capital, in addition to revealing his plans and aspirations for the global triathlon scene.
An Unusual Choice: Why Aracaju?
Dylan Nortjé explained that he chose the Aracaju event for a practical reason: its proximity. "It's different from other continents, but it's very close to home," he said, referring to an eight-hour flight, a contrast to the 24 hours needed to reach Europe. Besides logistics, the heat was an attraction. "I like to race in the heat. Coming from South Africa, my whole life has been in the heat," he stated. This is Dylan's first time in Brazil and South America, an experience he describes as wonderful: "People are very happy. Nobody can communicate with me, but everyone is happy. I love it."
Strategy in a Tropical Climate and Respect for Adversaries
Asked about his competitors and strategy, Dylan was direct. He doesn't usually analyze the start list before the race, preferring to focus on his own performance. "I know the names, but I don't know how they've been racing this year," he commented about athletes like Reinaldo Colucci and Igor Amorelli. Regarding the climate, Aracaju's heat, although familiar to him, presents a unique challenge against Brazilians. "I feel great, but normally, when I race elsewhere, I use the heat to my advantage. Now, racing against Brazilians who have lived in it their whole lives, I think maybe I won't be the strongest," he joked, emphasizing the need for plenty of hydration.
Eyeing Nice and Kona: The Next Steps
Itaú BBA IRONMAN 70.3 Aracaju marks Dylan Nortjé's last race of the year. After the competition, the focus shifts to vacation, with plans for "beer and beach" starting Monday. For 2025, his goals are ambitious. "I need to talk to my coach, but maybe Kona," he revealed, mentioning that his entire team is going. However, the main immediate goal is Nice. "That's why I came to Brazil, to get a slot for Nice. So, Nice is first, and maybe Kona." Before saying goodbye, Dylan reaffirmed his affection for Brazil, expressing that he loved the experience: "I love it, I love it. Even the lady who stamped my passport was teaching me Portuguese." And with a genuine "obrigado" (thank you), he concluded the interview, promising it wouldn't be his last visit.
