André Lopes Reveals Career Goals and Boulder Routine
On Café com Tri, the triathlete details his dream of winning an Ironman, his US coaching business, and training in Colorado.
Based in Colorado since 2019, pro triathlete André Lopes aims to win a full Ironman and secure a top-10 finish in Kona over the coming years. In a conversation on Café com Tri, he explains how he balances elite competition with coaching amateur athletes in the US and what makes training in Boulder unique.
With most of his early goals already achieved in elite triathlon—including podium finishes on the professional circuit and Ironman 70.3 victories—André Lopes continues to set the bar high for the next chapter of his career. Appearing on the Café com Tri podcast by Stemma Sports, the triathlete revealed that his primary objective for the next five years is to win a full-distance Ironman race (with Florianópolis and Florida topping the list) and target a top-10 finish at the Kona World Championship.
Sports coaching and the US market
Beyond his intense training schedule, André has worked as a coach since 2019 to supplement his income as a professional athlete. An engineer by trade with background experience as a lifeguard and swim coach, he established a coaching consultancy alongside Wagner Spadotto in Boulder. The program currently guides around 15 athletes, most of whom reside in the United States.
When analyzing his client base, André highlighted a striking cultural difference between triathletes in Brazil and the United States. While the Brazilian coaching model operates as an in-person community with strong social ties, the American amateur tends to be far more individualistic. Because of this, his coaching is handled 100% online through TrainingPeaks, tailoring training loads by power and heart rate directly around each athlete's personal schedule.
Daily routine and training camps in Boulder
Living in Boulder since late 2019, André describes the Colorado city as a true playground for endurance sports. Home to a dense concentration of Olympic champions and elite pros, the area offers an extensive network of dirt roads, mountains, and uninterrupted cycling routes stretching over 100 km without traffic stops.
Capitalizing on this infrastructure, André and Wagner organize regular training camps in Colorado, hosting groups preparing for major events like the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Chattanooga. The full Café com Tri episode also delved into André Lopes's professional race dynamics and his insights into the international competitive landscape.
