The Importance of Festup and APP Brasil in Educating Advertisers

The bridge between academia and the job market was a central topic at the start of the conversation. Commenting on the work of the Association of Advertising Professionals (APP Brasil), Braga highlighted Festup as one of the primary stepping stones into the industry for communication students from across the country.

According to Braga, large-scale events like this facilitate direct interactions that often transform entry-level careers. "I consider it the main event today bridging communication students and seasoned professionals. And it’s massive—universities coordinate travel specifically for it," said Braga, noting his first contact with APP was in 2004 through its graduation thesis competition.

How Communities and Creativity Build Stronger Brands

Marcos Braga's Career Path and His 'People Gatherer' DNA

Before establishing Amigos do Mercado as a business, Braga built a 25-year career in advertising across media outlets and agencies. His knack for leading and bringing people together emerged early on, from organizing informal get-togethers to serving 19 years as president of an amateur soccer club, Calangos.

For Braga, transitioning to full-time community management was the professionalization of a natural habit. "I'm a lifelong people gatherer. I connect people here at WeWork, I bring people together wherever I go. Because I love that connection," he explained. This ability to build bridges and cultivate mutual trust became the foundation for expanding the Amigos do Mercado ecosystem over its ten-year history.

The Power of Communities, Referrals, and Authentic Networking

Analyzing community-led growth strategies, Braga argued that genuine communities cannot thrive under centralized or top-down models. In his view, a community environment must give members an active voice and the freedom to exchange ideas, driving high-quality peer-to-peer recommendations.

"When you bring together people with a shared interest, they generate tons of content, valuable recommendations, and opportunities across the board—including new business," Braga highlighted. He emphasized that leading a group requires active listening and balance: "Keeping a group muted where only I speak isn't a community; it's an information broadcast channel." In interpersonal relationships, Braga reinforced that genuine networking requires sincere curiosity about others. "Practice giving your attention. Look at people and listen to them more than you speak," he noted.

Brand Building and the Role of Creativity Beyond Performance Media

Braga advocated for the vital role of advertising and consistent branding to protect and grow market share, pointing out that an exclusive focus on performance media cannot replace the cultural resonance of a great creative idea.

"Advertising has the power to insert your brand into everyday conversations, and only creativity can do that—performance media can't," Braga stated. He observed that established brands maintain consistent marketing investments because the cost of losing market share and brand recall far exceeds any savings from budget cuts. "No major brand was ever built without robust investment in advertising," Braga emphasized, noting that memorable messaging amplifies the financial return of any campaign.

Democratizing Recognition in Advertising: Prêmio Amigos do Mercado and Festival Elan

The advertising sector has traditionally concentrated industry awards among executive leadership and agencies in major metropolitan hubs. To reshape that dynamic, Amigos do Mercado launched initiatives designed to recognize early-career professionals and essential operational departments, such as commercial operations (OPEC).

Braga explained that the Prêmio Amigos do Mercado uses public voting and focuses on manager-level categories, spotlighting the talent that keeps company operations running day in and day out. In parallel, Festival Elan was created to evaluate communication case studies across specific formats—such as brand activations and podcasts—combining project showcases with educational masterclasses. "Festival Elan is about adding fresh ingredients to your creative blender," Braga concluded, emphasizing their mission to democratize industry access and practical learning.
