Velocità: How Running Mileage Unlocks Black Friday Deals

Alexandre Estefano explains the Black Friday Run and a loyalty strategy trading miles for discounts.

Instead of entering a price war with mass-market retailers, specialty running retailer Velocità chose to reward real runners for their efforts. Alexandre Estefano details the mechanics of the Black Friday Run and the store's broader loyalty ecosystem.

Competing directly in massive discount events alongside e-commerce giants and mass-market retailers has always posed a major challenge for specialty running stores. In an appearance on the Se Liga Nelas videocast, Alexandre Estefano, managing partner at Velocità, detailed the brand's strategy to avoid predatory Black Friday margin wars while continuing to bring genuine value to everyday road runners.

The Clearance Dilemma and Shrinking Margins

The traditional Black Friday playbook relies on massive volume: retail giants slash prices aggressively because they profit from sheer scale. For a niche business built on technical expertise and product curation, matching these price cuts would destroy profit margins and jeopardize financial sustainability. At the same time, the store frequently saw runners visit brick-and-mortar locations to test new models, only to complete their purchases elsewhere.

To solve this problem and keep runners engaged, Velocità took a proprietary route. The solution was not liquidating inventory at all costs, but creating a positioning strategy that actively encouraged running while rewarding customer loyalty.

The Birth of Black Friday Run and Loyalty Rewards

About a decade ago, the brand introduced the Black Friday Run. The initiative initially gained momentum through a partnership with the Mova Mais app (which later evolved into Heartbeat), a pioneer in converting tracked kilometers into reward points. The original mechanic was simple: on Black Friday, every kilometer logged by a runner converted into a matching percentage discount at the store.

This foundation anchored Velocità's loyalty ecosystem, which now turns training volume and purchase frequency into points, cashback, and coupons. The primary goal is retention: recognizing dedicated athletes and ensuring that commercial perks reach runners who genuinely lace up and log miles on the road.

30th Anniversary Edition and Tech Integration

As the campaign adapted over time to the Brazilian retail calendar—where promotions span the entire month of November—the event moved to late October. The 10th edition of the Black Friday Run, held as part of Velocità's 30th-anniversary celebrations, takes place on October 30.

The current setup integrates directly with fitness-tracking platforms like Strava and Garmin. Participants register, accept the terms, connect their devices, and run on the designated date. Each kilometer logged, up to a 42 km limit, unlocks an equivalent percentage discount on any product in the store—including carbon-plated super shoes and the season's most sought-after releases.

To safeguard campaign integrity and prevent fraudulent entries, such as users logging cycling workouts, the organizers deploy verification filters and artificial intelligence to validate pace and movement metrics before issuing earned coupons.
