Therapy Dogs Calm Runners at the New York City Marathon
A partnership with New York Therapy Animals has brought dogs to the start village since 2016 to comfort anxious athletes.
At the New York City Marathon start line, runners turn to therapy dogs to ease pre-race jitters. Partnered with New York Therapy Animals since 2016, the initiative brings comfort and affection before the 26.2-mile challenge.
Pre-race jitters are all too familiar to any runner gearing up to tackle 26.2 miles. Amid mental pace calculations, elevation profile worries, and the search for the portable toilet line, the New York City Marathon staging area features a special presence to ease the tension: therapy dogs ready to interact with participants.
Emotional support before the starting gun
The initiative is organized in partnership with New York Therapy Animals, an organization that brings volunteer handlers and their certified dogs to the starting village on Staten Island. The official marathon partnership has been in place since 2016, aiming to provide calm, affection, and emotional support to marathoners during their most anxious moments.
While thousands of athletes wait for their corral calls, the dogs stay in the staging area, allowing runners to pet them and shift their focus away from pre-race pressure. The topic was highlighted on Radar Stemma, which discussed the importance of pre-race psychological support at major international events.
