Paula Ponte: Sports, Motherhood, and a New Performance

With 15 Ironman 70.3 races and a Kona spot, the triathlete shares how she redefined high performance after having children.

A former triathlete with four full-distance Ironmans under her belt, Paula Ponte reflects on how motherhood transformed her daily routine. Navigating modified workouts and sleepless nights, she explains how she qualified for the Boston Marathon without compromising family life.

For years, Paula Ponte's identity was defined by the demanding routine of high-performance athletics. With 15 Ironman 70.3 finishes, four full-distance Ironmans, and a qualification for the Kona World Championship, endurance sports were at the absolute center of her life. However, the transition to motherhood—she is now mother to three-year-old Júlia and ten-month-old Luca—forced a profound shift in her daily routine, physical limits, and self-image.

From 15 Half Ironmans to a Sub-3 Marathon

Paula's endurance journey started simply: with no high-end bikes or complex training plans, she took up triathlon at age 18, training through gym spinning and swim classes. As results began to follow, her commitment grew. She eventually lived temporarily in St. Moritz, Switzerland, doing altitude training alongside Olympic athletes and world champion Daniela Ryf under Swiss coach Brett Sutton.

Despite reaching an elite amateur level, Paula chose not to turn professional, recognizing a competitive gap compared to athletes who had swum competitively since childhood. Later, when races were repeatedly canceled during the pandemic, she shifted her focus almost exclusively to road running. This dedication paid off immediately in her pure marathon debut: she clocked a 2:59 at the Berlin Marathon, cementing her speed on the asphalt.

The Identity Shift of Motherhood

Pregnancy brought complex reflections about tying self-worth directly to athletic performance. The moment her home workout space had to make way for a crib and changing table marked the onset of an identity crisis. At the time, she worried that motherhood might mean an end to her competitive journey, given how few examples existed of amateur mothers competing at a high level.

Looking to prepare for this new phase, Paula completed a postgraduate degree in parental intelligence even before getting pregnant with her first daughter. Understanding child development and emotional regulation helped her navigate the challenges of the first year with greater empathy and less frustration, enabling her to read infant behavior without taking daily stress personally.

Realistic Training Routines and Qualifying for Boston

Returning to training required letting go of rigid schedules. While her postpartum return after Júlia was swift—running the Chicago Marathon just 14 months later—the process after Luca's birth demanded even more patience. With two children, recovery windows disappeared, and workout times had to fit school schedules, shifting to 8:30 a.m.

Coached by Wagner Spadotto (ID Endurance), Paula learned to adjust training load based on sleep quality and daily fatigue. Without completing an extensive marathon-specific build, but maintaining a solid foundation of consistent mileage, she ran the SP City Marathon and earned a qualifying time to apply for the 2027 Boston Marathon.

Leading by Example and a New Definition of Performance

For Paula, performance today is no longer defined strictly by race times or aggressive paces, but by giving her best within her current life stage. In addition to road races, she has also embraced trail running, including El Cruce, a three-day, 100 km crossing through Patagonia alongside her husband.

Today, her greatest goal at home is to serve as a positive role model for her children. Rather than focusing on pure competition, her aim is to present sports as a foundation for discipline, self-esteem, and well-being, while preserving running as a non-negotiable space for personal connection.
