NB 42K Porto Alegre: Elite Women's Goals and Challenges
Elite female marathon runners reveal their ambitious goals, the pursuit of records, and the thrill of racing on Brazilian soil.
The New Balance 42K Porto Alegre press conference brought together top elite female athletes to discuss their expectations. Marina Hishinini aims for a new personal best, while Mirela Saturnino shares details of her preparation. International athletes like Caroline Chepkwony and Judith Cherono also emphasized the importance of weather conditions for a good performance.
The official press conference for the New Balance 42K Porto Alegre highlighted the expectations and challenges awaiting the elite female athletes. Mediated by Fabio Bessa and Thiago Kawamura from Stemma Sports, the marathon runners shared their ambitious goals and the excitement of participating in one of the most important events on the national calendar.
Ambitious Goals and the Courage to Share
Brazilian Marina Hishinini, who holds a time of 2:36:07 (achieved in Valencia), did not hide her goal: to lower that mark to 2:34. Marina is known for openly sharing her objectives, believing that the support and encouragement of the sports community serve as fuel. "I like to believe that most people, or those who follow me, are rooting for this," she stated, emphasizing that in sports, "one pulls the other."
For Marina, this will be the first time competing for the top positions in a major race in Brazil, which brings an unusual "butterflies in the stomach" feeling, but also the motivation of "extra fuel" for the end of the race. The experience of running alongside great names in the sport is seen as a booster for her growth as an athlete.
Intense Preparation and Realism on the Track
Marathon runner Mirela Saturnino shared details of her rigorous preparation in Petrolina, Pernambuco, with the APA Petrolina team. She highlighted the importance of the team's support and gratitude for its structure.
With a history of being runner-up in Porto Alegre and a recent participation in the Hamburg Marathon, Mirela is optimistic about the local weather, describing it as "calm." Despite her optimism and positive mindset – "we are not enemies, we compete" – Mirela was realistic when asked about the possibility of breaking Adriana Aparecida da Silva's Brazilian record (2:29, from 2012) this Sunday. "I don't think so at the moment," she admitted, explaining that she had just run another marathon and would not have the capacity for such a feat right now, demonstrating the transparency and sincerity valued in high-performance sports.
International Athletes and the Influence of Climate
Among the foreign athletes, Caroline Chepkwony and Judith Cherono expressed their gratitude for being in Brazil and their expectation of a good performance in the race. Caroline, who was a two-time champion of the Frankfurt Marathon with a time of 2:22 and ran 2:31 this year in Hong Kong, and Judith, who recorded 2:29 last year in Kazan, Russia, share a common concern: weather conditions.
Both stated that if the weather is favorable, they expect to achieve a good result. For Judith, this will be her first experience in Porto Alegre, adding an element of novelty to her participation.
The press conference revealed an atmosphere of healthy competition and mutual respect, where athletes, while seeking victory, also support and inspire each other. The New Balance 42K Porto Alegre promises to be an exciting race, with great names in women's athletics looking to push their own limits and write new chapters in marathon history.
