Brazilian and Kenyan athletes detail their preparation and expectations for the Porto Alegre Marathon, focusing on overcoming challenges and setting new records.

The official New Balance 42k Porto Alegre press conference brought together the elite male athletes for a candid discussion about the challenge. Debutant Fábio de Jesus and reigning champion Jonathas Cruz shared how they handle pressure and the importance of patience. Kenyan athletes Filemon Kiptoo and Timothy Catan expressed optimism about breaking the course record and the excitement of running alongside icon Eliud Kipchoge.

The eagerly anticipated New Balance 42k Porto Alegre Marathon is set to electrify the streets of the Gaúcha capital, and the press conference with the elite male athletes has already set the tone for what to expect. Moderated by Fabio Bessa, the conversation brought to light the expectations, challenges, and strategies of runners Fábio de Jesus, Jonathas Cruz, Filemon Kiptoo, and Timothy Catan.

The Debut and Brazilian Pressure

For Fábio de Jesus, the Porto Alegre Marathon marks his debut at the distance, a moment of great anticipation and, naturally, pressure. "It's a huge source of pride for me to debut in Brazil and alongside them here," said Fábio, referring to the other athletes, including last year's champion. He emphasizes the importance of believing and having faith, overcoming difficulties. His decision to debut in Brazil, motivated by good results in national races, gained a special flavor with Eliud Kipchoge's presence.

Jonathas Cruz, the current champion of the race, understands well the responsibility that the title brings. He emphasizes that pressure is "imminent" for professional athletes and that intense preparation is about "working hard" and making every effort count. "Leaving family, wife, father, mother, children to be here and work hard," Jonathas reflects, highlighting the sacrifice and dedication behind every marathon.

Strategy, Patience, and the Power of the Group

When it comes to strategy, both Fábio and Jonathas converge on a crucial point: patience. "A marathon is about the day, the moment," Jonathas states, warning that the race "will be decided after 30, 32, 35 km." He reinforces the idea that group running and mutual help are fundamental until the decisive moments.

The athletes also touched upon the difference between group training in Brazil and Kenya. Fábio and Jonathas lamented the difficulty of training together in Brazil due to distance and the smaller number of elite athletes concentrated in one region. Jonathas described the Kenyan reality: "inside one house, in Kenya, sometimes five, six athletes live together. On the street, 10 athletes together." He believes this dynamic of intense, daily group training prepares Kenyan athletes for the pressure of competition.

Records and an Encounter with an Icon

Kenyan athletes, Filemon Kiptoo and Timothy Catan, who have already recorded times of 2h06 at the Barcelona Marathon, arrive in Porto Alegre with high ambitions. They aim to break the Brazilian record for the race, currently around 2h11, hoping to achieve times like 2h09 or 2h08, "if the weather and conditions are suitable." They highlighted the Brazilian fans and the excitement of running in the country.

One of the highlights of the press conference was the mention of Eliud Kipchoge. Both Filemon and Timothy expressed great admiration. "Kipchoge is our role model, just as he is a global icon," said Timothy. For Filemon, it will be the first time competing against the icon, although they have trained together in Kenya. He expressed a desire to run with Kipchoge "before he retires," demonstrating the respect and inspiration the Kenyan represents for the new generation of marathon runners.

With a combination of debutant athletes, champions defending their titles, and international talents seeking records, the New Balance 42k Porto Alegre Marathon promises to be an unforgettable event. Patience and resilience will be put to the test, but the passion for running is the engine that drives all these asphalt warriors.
