Invited to compete in Patagonman this December, Mikelle Coelho faces extreme conditions and freezing waters in Patagonia. Accustomed to the heat of Fortaleza, Brazil, the triathlete details her acclimatization plan featuring ice baths and cold-water training in Portugal.
Mikelle Coelho has revealed her next major endurance goal: competing in Patagonman, the iconic extreme full-distance triathlon held in Chilean Patagonia this December. The challenge places the athlete in an environment completely opposite to her regular training routine in the tropical heat of northeastern Brazil.
The Invitation and Pursuit of the Podium
Although the event does not feature a traditional professional category, organizers select and invite three elite men and three elite women to join the competition's field. According to Mikelle, the invitation to represent Brazil comes with high expectations for a standout finish in the women's division.
From Warm Waters in Fortaleza to Full Neoprene Gear
The main hurdle in her preparation is thermal shock. Based in Fortaleza, where the ocean is warm and wetsuits are never needed, Mikelle must adapt not only to freezing water temperatures but also to all the technical apparel required by the Patagonian climate. The swim leg will require a thermal vest, a thicker wetsuit, neoprene socks, gloves, and a hood that covers most of her face.
Acclimatization Strategy and Homework
To simulate race conditions, the triathlete scheduled a training camp in Portugal throughout November, incorporating daily cold-water swims alongside regular ice baths. As part of her preparation, Mikelle also sought advice from triathlete Paulo Puccinelli, a previous race finisher, while studying video footage to master the dynamics of the extreme environment.
