Mikelle Coelho Analyzes Women's Field at IRONMAN 70.3 Floripa

The triathlete breaks down the pros and cons of an all-female elite field, the bike course, and the high level of competition.

In an interview with Stemma Sports, Mikelle Coelho broke down the impact of an all-female professional start list at IRONMAN 70.3 Florianopolis. She highlighted field growth, single-loop bike course dynamics, and overall race competitiveness.

An all-female professional start list at IRONMAN 70.3 Florianopolis sparked important discussions about visibility, representation, and race dynamics. Speaking with Stemma Sports during race coverage, pro triathlete Mikelle Coelho shared her thoughts on the decision to spotlight the women's elite field and its direct impact on field size.

Expanded visibility and the challenges of split fields

For Mikelle, having an event dedicated solely to female professionals served as a major draw to fill the starting grid. With 15 confirmed athletes, the race assembled one of the largest fields of the year on Brazil's national circuit. The triathlete noted that exclusive media and broadcast coverage highlights women's performance and encourages new competitors to take up long-distance triathlon. As a personal benchmark, she recalled that her largest previous start list had been abroad in Cascais, where she raced against 18 professionals.

On the other hand, Mikelle weighed some drawbacks of splitting the fields. In her view, uniting men's and women's pro fields usually generates broader overall media reach for the event. Separating race dates also created logistical hurdles for athlete couples—such as Danilo and Vitoria—and forced tough calendar trade-offs. Mikelle mentioned that she had to skip racing in Aracaju, a special event where she claimed her first professional podium the previous year.

Race dynamics and field depth

When asked about potential pacing changes without the pro men sharing the road, Mikelle noted that the Florianopolis course layout minimizes major disruptions. Because the bike segment is contested over a single loop, race dynamics flow much cleaner than on multi-lap circuits—such as IRONMAN 70.3 Sao Paulo, where two bike laps create more pack overlap and congestion with age groupers.

Regarding her rivals, Mikelle highlighted the technical quality of the 15 confirmed athletes, who range from competitors with Olympic experience to international contenders. Calling the race both a privilege and a decisive late-season test, the Brazilian athlete emphasized that the level of competition will be fierce: nobody entered just to participate, and the battle promises to push every engine to the limit right down to the final stretch.
