The triathlete details the mental battle against the rain and how she capitalized on the bike split to deliver power.
In an interview with Stemma Sports, Mikelle Coelho reflected on the toughest moments of Ironman 70.3 São Paulo. The triathlete explained how she handled the tension caused by the rain and analyzed her performance on the bike course.
In an interview on the Stemma Sports channel, triathlete Mikelle Coelho reflected on the challenges she faced during Ironman 70.3 São Paulo. On a day marked by rain, low visibility, and slick asphalt, the athlete highlighted that her biggest battle in the city ended up being psychological.
Adverse weather and the mental battle
According to Mikelle, the combination of overcast skies and wet pavement created constant tension right from the start of the race. The athlete noted that the day took a heavy mental toll, making it harder to respond than in other races where she typically feels more combative. Despite pushing herself to unlock a faster pace, the sense of vulnerability brought on by the grueling conditions ultimately dictated the race dynamics.
Cycling strategy and numbers
Despite the unfavorable conditions, the strategy was to deliver the best possible performance within the windows of opportunity the course provided. On the bike split, Mikelle noted that while the beginning and end of the course were slow and difficult to ride, there was a middle section of roughly 60 kilometers where it was possible to build speed and push power.
By accelerating through this middle section, the triathlete was able to ride hard and sustain a strong pace. When analyzing the data and post-race metrics, Mikelle confirmed that her fitness and power were there whenever the course allowed, emphasizing that certain struggles on extreme weather days simply stem from variables beyond an athlete's control.
