Luma Guillen Eyes Victory at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo

After focusing on short-course racing, the triathlete returns to the half Ironman energized and ready to compete in São Paulo.

Preparing for Ironman 70.3 São Paulo, Luma Guillen detailed her return to middle-distance racing after competing on the national circuit. The triathlete evaluated her altitude training, half-marathon pacing, and plans to contend for the top of the women's elite podium.

After dedicating much of the season to the Brazilian short-course championship, professional triathlete Luma Guillen is back on the middle-distance circuit for the Nubank Ultravioleta IRONMAN 70.3 São Paulo. Stepping away from long-distance events since her last races in Rio de Janeiro and Florianópolis, Luma arrives in São Paulo well-rested and motivated after a strategic break earlier this year.

Specific training and altitude adaptation

Transitioning from Olympic-distance events to a half Ironman does not necessarily require a drastic surge in overall volume, but rather targeted stimuli. Luma noted that her recent preparation included high-altitude training alongside long-distance athletes, focusing on controlled intensity zones and pace sustainability—critical factors for delivering strong performances across the 90 km bike leg and the 21.1 km run.

Swim strategy and half-marathon pace

Known for her consistency in the opening discipline, Luma views the São Paulo swim course as favorable. The straightforward out-and-back layout with minimal navigational challenges offers an ideal opportunity to push for the lead right from the start. Her primary objective is to exit the water in front, ideally solo or in a small breakaway pack, establishing a solid buffer heading into the first transition.

On the run, the athlete aims for a steady effort to close the half marathon under 1:30. While acknowledging she has not yet reached peak physical form, Luma emphasized that her drive to win remains her strongest asset to offset any lack of competitive rhythm.

Open elite field and upcoming schedule

Assessing the women's pro field, Luma highlighted Argentina's Romina as a key benchmark and race favorite. Strong contenders such as Mari on the bike, Rachel across the swim and bike legs, alongside the reliable Bruna Mahn, set the stage for an open and highly competitive battle for the podium.

With the stated goal of fighting for the win—and viewing a top-three finish as a solid result—Luma is open to accepting a qualifying slot for the 70.3 World Championship if she secures one. Looking ahead, she plans to line up for the women's race in Florianópolis, maintaining a versatile schedule between short-course and middle-distance triathlon.
