João Teixeira Eyes Top 5 at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo
The triathlete details run nutrition testing, race dynamics in São Paulo, and an upcoming training camp in Girona.
Preparing for Ironman 70.3 São Paulo, João Teixeira discusses transitioning from short to middle-distance racing, warm-up strategies, and run nutrition. The professional triathlete also breaks down his competitive goals and plans for the season finale.
Coming off a busy stretch in his season—which included defending his title at the Brazilian Standard Championship and competing in the Continental Cup in Ilhéus—professional triathlete João Teixeira arrives at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo focused on consolidating his transition to middle-distance racing. After health setbacks kept him from starting in Brasília and forced a DNF at the Rio de Janeiro event, the athlete is aiming for a consistent race from start to finish in the capital.
Distance Transition and Warm-Up Routine
Accustomed to the dynamics and intensity of short-course racing, "Joãozinho" notes that preparing for a 70.3 involves higher volume and requires metabolic and muscular adjustments. One of the challenges highlighted by the triathlete on the national circuit is the inability to warm up in the water before the start, a restriction due to early morning start times and low light.
To avoid starting the swim and bike legs with cold muscles and experiencing early heart rate spikes, João recently went viral for using a bike trainer in the transition area. The goal of this routine is to activate his legs and stabilize his breathing before the intense pace required right from the opening kilometers.
Race Strategy, Nutrition, and Aerodynamics
Analyzing the dynamic at 70.3 São Paulo, João anticipates an aggressive swim pushed by strong swimmers such as Chile's Vicente Trewhela, Pedro Fernandes, and Vitor Hugo, with the potential formation of a lead pack before the long two-kilometer transition. On the bike, although he acknowledges that he is still using the stock cockpit setup on his Trek and plans future aerodynamic upgrades, his goal is to ride solidly to reach the run in contention.
On the run leg, where he believes he has the potential to break 1:18, the triathlete is implementing a new nutrition protocol in partnership with his support team: using soft flasks filled with liquid carbohydrates instead of relying exclusively on gels, a format that delivered better gastric tolerance during long training sessions.
Top 5 Focus and Girona Training Camp
Supported by the Pró Goiás Esporte project, João Teixeira's schedule following São Paulo includes a three-week training camp in Girona, Spain, during October. The objective of this European block is to elevate his cycling performance before returning to Brazil to acclimatize in Goiânia and compete in Ironman 70.3 Aracaju.
For the race in São Paulo, his main focus is to execute a complete race with health and consistency, putting himself squarely in the fight for a top-5 finish in the professional elite.
