Grief and Duty at the Finish Line of La Misión Brasil

Fabiana Ferreira looks back on the day she learned of her mother's passing and chose to stay on the mic until the final finisher.

While announcing at La Misión Brasil, Fabiana Ferreira received the heartbreaking news of her mother's death. In an interview on Stemma Na Trilha, she shared how she drew strength from her family's words and the runners' passion to see the race through to the end.

Working the finish line of a trail race demands non-stop energy and an unbroken connection with the crowd. Breaking News Mid-Race and Family Guidance

Fabi already knew her mother was in fragile health, but she was caught off guard by the news of her passing in the middle of race day, around 1:00 PM. In the midst of shock, the decision to stay at the venue came after a phone call with her sister, who urged her to stay calm while their brother handled the necessary arrangements. Her sister's words proved decisive: their mother's mission had come to an end, but Fabiana's mission at the arena had to continue until the very last runner crossed the finish line.

The Connection with Runners at the Finish Arch

Her commitment to the runners also weighed heavily on her decision to return to the arch. The day before, an athlete had shared that she overcame severe panic disorder by training to recordings of Fabiana's voice calling out finisher, and that her dream was to cross that line and be welcomed by her. Thinking of that story and so many other journeys of resilience relying on the event's energy, Fabi put on her sunglasses and stayed at the announcer's booth until 8:00 PM.

Professional Partnership and Holding the Space

For the awards ceremony, Fabi coordinated a smooth handoff with Sidney Togumi, briefing him on key announcements so the event could proceed seamlessly while she stepped aside to grieve. Reflecting on the experience and other tough moments faced later in the sport, the announcer highlighted her growth in understanding her role: realizing that, even through deep personal pain, uplifting the arena's spirit and honoring every finisher's journey remains her primary responsibility.
