Gabriel Klein on Post-Surgery Return and 70.3 SP Focus

The professional triathlete details training adjustments after the full Ironman and his quest for running consistency.

In an interview ahead of Ironman 70.3 São Paulo, Gabriel Klein reflects on his one-year post-surgery recovery cycle. The triathlete explains the challenges of readapting his body to middle-distance speed after competing in the full distance.

Marking exactly one year since undergoing surgery, professional triathlete Gabriel Klein arrives at Ironman 70.3 São Paulo focused on solidifying metrics and rediscovering his ideal pace at the distance. Coming off an intense block that included competing in Ironman 70.3 Rio de Janeiro and taking a victory in a short-course race in Santa Catarina the previous week, Klein aims to turn his training progress into a solid result on the streets of São Paulo.

From Frustration in Rio to Adjustments for São Paulo

The preparation process for São Paulo required recalibrating after his performance in Rio de Janeiro, where the athlete took risks on the swim and ended up compromising the bike and run legs. After stepping back to reevaluate his plan, Klein used intermediate races to regain confidence and test technical details before toeing the line in the capital.

For the triathlete, the key to the weekend is not blindly chasing the pace of the leaders in the water, but executing a controlled race from start to finish. By staying disciplined on the swim, his goal is to save energy to deliver the true numbers he has been hitting on the bike and run.

Transitioning from Full Distance to 70.3 Speed

A major milestone in Klein's season was Ironman Brazil (full distance), where he lowered his personal best and completed his third 226 km race. However, shifting from high-volume marathon mileage to the intensity required in a half Ironman brings specific pacing challenges.

Klein highlights that running at the front of the men's pro field in a 70.3 requires making a 3:20/km to 3:25/km pace feel natural across the half marathon. His post-surgery recovery and prior focus on long-distance racing temporarily reduced his ability to sustain track workouts and intense interval sets—a balance he is still working to refine alongside his training partners.

Competitive Field and Expectations

Looking at the professional start list in São Paulo, Gabriel points to established names like Santiago Ascenço and André Tode among the main podium contenders. Rather than fixating on a specific top-5 or top-10 finish, his priority is crossing the line feeling that he maximized everything built in training.
