From Post-NYC Fracture to 3:08 at the London Marathon

Ju Markan reflects on an injury-enforced break, a comeback win in Carneiros, and fulfilling her dream of racing London's streets.

Following a strong debut at the New York City Marathon, Ju Markan overcame a stress fracture before taking first place at the Carneiros 5K and clocking 3:08 in London. In a conversation on Girls Who Run, she shares key lessons learned throughout her recovery.

The post-New York City Marathon excitement came with ambitious plans. With coach Fábio recognizing her podium potential, Ju Markan was riding the high of new athletic goals when her body demanded an abrupt halt. What started as shin splints quickly evolved into a stress fracture between late November and early December.

The diagnosis came as an initial shock. Unable to run and medically cleared only for swimming and cycling, Ju briefly considered transitioning to triathlon and even got a bike fit at a shop. However, the holiday peak at her fashion brand took priority, prompting her to direct her full focus toward business and restorative rest.

The Comeback at Réveillon de Carneiros

After four weeks completely away from running, her return took place during the year-end celebrations at Réveillon de Carneiros. Registered for the local 5K, her initial expectation was simply to finish without pushing her recovery.

Despite the lack of recent training rhythm, her performance exceeded expectations: Ju crossed the finish line in first place, securing the overall victory and a prize of R$2,000 to spend at the event's beach club. The triumph marked her first podium of this new chapter and bolstered her motivation for upcoming challenges.

Achieving 3:08 in London

Her recovery paved the way to prepare for the London Marathon, secured through a travel agency. The race held special significance by fulfilling a longtime dream of visiting the British capital—this time competing at a high-performance level.

With her parents cheering along the course, Ju finished the 26.2 miles through the streets of London with a time of 3:08, cementing her progress in the distance and reinforcing the importance of listening to her body.
