Andrea Mustafa: Aquatic Ultralong-Distance Swimming, Mindset, and Personal Challenges
Discover how athlete and executive Andrea Mustafa balances her career, family, and training, transforming limits into possibilities in open waters.
In this episode of Natação Stemma, ultralong-distance swimmer Andrea Mustafa shares her journey in open waters. She reveals the difference between personal challenges and competitive races, the importance of a multidisciplinary team, and how discipline shapes her life. An inspiration for turning goals into achievements.
On the Natação Stemma podcast, hosts Samir Barel and Wanderley Santos welcome Andrea Mustafa, an aquatic ultra-marathon athlete with an impressive resume. A mother, professional, and member of the Yellow Caps team, Andrea shares her unique perspective on sport and life, highlighting how discipline and planning are crucial to her achievements, such as the recent 42 km Mega Round Trip Challenge, which made her the first person to complete this unprecedented feat.
Personal Challenges vs. Competition: The Ultra-Swimmer's Mindset
Andrea explores the mental difference between individual challenges (like the 42 km Challenge) and competitive races. While in challenges the goal is simply to finish, in races, the pressure to reach the podium and comparison with other athletes generate much greater anxiety. For her, failing a challenge means not finishing; in a race, it might mean not finishing well-placed or not reaching the podium. This perception is so strong that, on one occasion, not reaching the podium in an Ultra made her feel like she failed, despite her numerous other victories.
Wanderley Santos, her coach, even quoted Michael Jordan to question the idea of failure, suggesting that not winning every time is not synonymous with failing. Andrea acknowledges the argument's validity but reiterates that, as a hobby, her self-expectation is high. In challenges, the mind can "wander" — thinking about music or daily tasks. In races, however, the focus is almost exclusively on technique and opponents, a process she considers more stressful. For this reason, the ultra-swimmer prefers the experience of challenges, where the pace can be adjusted, and the journey is more enjoyable.
The Pillar of Performance: Team and Multidisciplinary Planning
Andrea's performance is not just the result of individual talent but of rigorous planning and the support of a multidisciplinary team. She emphasizes the importance of:
- Sports doctor (Dr. Putinelli): To monitor general, hormonal health, and blood indicators.
- Nutritionist (Mari Morales): Essential for diet, which she confesses is a challenging area.
- Physical trainer (Johnny): For strengthening and injury prevention, allowing her to train without interruptions.
- Physiotherapist (Marcelo Simplício and team): For treating and preventing chronic pain, such as in the shoulder, through regular physiotherapy sessions and myofascial release (with Aila).
- Mental coach (Zé Ferreira): To develop patience and resilience, especially in long races like Leme ao Pontal.
- Coach (Wanderley Santos): Fundamental for developing efficient and specific training plans.
While acknowledging that not everyone has access to such a comprehensive team, Andrea emphasizes that a doctor and coach are indispensable for any athlete aiming for long distances, such as 15km (Ultra), 21km (Mega), and 24km (14 Bis) races, or 25km (LDU) and 42km challenges, which can last from 4 to over 11 hours.
Sport as Integration: Family, Career, and Well-being
Balancing life as a mother of two children (14 and 11 years old) and an active professional (director at FlixBus Brazil) with an intense training routine demands exemplary discipline and planning. Andrea highlights her husband, Murilo's, crucial role in family logistics and creating a support system that allows her to dedicate herself to sports. She makes a point of maintaining a disciplined sleep routine, waking up early to train, which demonstrates the integration of sport into her life as a whole.
Andrea's passion for cycling emerged as an alternative during a shoulder injury. Initially a way to maintain cardiovascular activity, cycling became an important cross-training method and a mental escape, offering a new type of challenge and camaraderie.
For other women and mothers, her advice is clear: find a physical activity that brings you joy. Whether it's swimming, cycling, or even beach tennis, the important thing is to enjoy what you do to maintain consistency and discipline. Andrea believes that by taking care of herself through sports, a mother will be more fulfilled for her children, transforming "time for oneself" into "quality of life for everyone."
Inspiration and Legacy: More Than Records
Andrea Mustafa was not a standout athlete in her childhood but built her career in open waters with much training and dedication. Her journey proves that it's possible to achieve great feats without a champion's past, inspiring many to pursue their own limits. Completing training and challenge cycles, such as the Triple Crown (Ultra, Mega, and 14 Bis), is fundamental for motivation and longevity in the sport. Andrea's passion for long-distance swimming is a constant motivation for improvement and the pursuit of new horizons, such as the project to swim Manhattan.
Andrea's story is a testament to the human capacity for overcoming challenges. Her discipline, resilience, and the way she integrates sports into her life are an invitation for each of us to find our own path to transform challenges into achievements, both in and out of the water.
