The Future of Agencies and Creative Work in the AI Era
Renato Abdo analyzes the impact of artificial intelligence on the advertising industry, design's true value, and the importance of brand building.
In a conversation with Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast, Renato Abdo discusses how artificial intelligence is transforming advertising agencies. The dialogue addresses commoditized technical execution, the vital role of brand building versus performance marketing, and the creative challenges facing modern agencies.
Renato Abdo, business strategist at Lipicó and founder of Dialeto, joined Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast to analyze the state of communications agencies, the evolution of digital marketing, and how artificial intelligence is reshaping daily creative and strategic operations.
The full video episode illustrates the industry's journey from the dawn of the commercial internet to the rise of modern generative tools.
Early Days in Digital and Out-of-the-Box Innovation
Abdo began his career in digital marketing in 1996, back when the commercial internet was taking its first steps in Brazil and work took place at internet service providers before dedicated agencies emerged. That environment demanded constant experimentation to build websites and formats that lacked established industry playbooks or proven formulas.
To Abdo, genuine innovation requires a willingness to take risks and break away from conventional advertising norms. Reflecting on the mindset needed to develop new solutions, Abdo notes: "True invention, real creation, comes from breaking existing things. So, you have to be a little crazy."
English Buzzwords and Marketing Jargon
The flood of English buzzwords into everyday business and communications vocabulary often obscures simple, straightforward concepts, creating barriers for outsiders. Expressions such as growth marketing, creator economy, CAC, and CPL have turned into obligatory positioning markers within the advertising industry.
Abdo highlights that professionals frequently feel forced to adopt these buzzwords to stay relevant and keep up with industry trends. Describing this industry dynamic, Abdo explains: "Usually, man, people feel they have to follow along—that's the whole thing—because there's so much buzz built around that specific word."
Mental Health, Disconnecting, and the Pitfalls of Brainstorming
The fast-paced routine and heavy workloads in agency settings take a severe toll on professionals' physical and mental health. Abdo shares his own experience of reassessing priorities, stressing that well-being and rest are essential for career longevity and sustained creative output.
The ideation process thrives on downtime and subconscious incubation rather than high-pressure, structured meetings. Critical of traditional group brainstorming, Abdo points out: "Brainstorming the way people do it just doesn't work, you know?" In his view, sessions where teams enter a room without prior preparation tend to yield only superficial, generic ideas.
Industry Gimmicks, Design Value, and Branding vs. Performance
The digital marketing landscape faces distortions driven by unrealistic promises of quick returns and agencies chasing immediate gains without investing in client retention or long-term value. At the same time, core principles of visual design have increasingly been cast aside in favor of quickly assembled creative assets.
Relying solely on performance media caps business growth. Abdo stresses that paid traffic hits a ceiling when a brand is not built consistently: "Performance hits a plateau, right? You reach a point where you plateau if you only rely on performance." Sustaining perceived value requires continuous synergy between brand building and direct conversion.
The Future of Advertising Agencies in the AI Era
With the rapid rise of generative AI and low-code platforms, technical execution of routine tasks—such as front-end development and basic copywriting—has become fast and inexpensive. As a result, pure execution is no longer a primary competitive advantage in delivering marketing services.
An agency or consultant's true worth now lies in intellectual depth, cultural perspective, and strategic problem-solving for complex business challenges. Abdo emphasizes: "We need intellectual depth in agencies. You're not going to hire someone anymore just because they know how to execute. You're going to hire them for their perspective and knowledge base."
